A Yolo County jury on Tuesday found that Daniel Marsh was sane when he murdered a Davis couple.

He faces the possibility of life in prison without parole when he is sentenced. Marsh, 17, is ineligible for the death penalty because of his age.

He had been convicted of lying in wait, torture and two counts of first-degree murder. He was accused of stabbing to death Oliver "Chip" Northup, 87, and his wife Claudia Maupin, 76, in their condominium in April 2013.

WOODLAND (CBS13) – A Yolo County Superior Court Judge has sentenced a Davis teen to life in prison for the brutal murder of an elderly couple.

Daniel Marsh was found guilty in September of stabbing 87-year-old Chip Northup and his wife 76-year-old Claudia Maupin to death. The verdict also found the teen guilty on enhancements of lying in wait, torture and multiple murders.

At Friday’s hearing, Judge David Reed sentenced Marsh to 52 years to life in prison – 25 years for each count of murder, plus two more years.

Daniel William Marsh’s hearing on whether his murder sentence should stand for the 2013 slaughter of an elderly Davis couple began Monday over the objections of his attorneys.

The attorneys wanted a delay until after the New Year, when a just-signed California juvenile sentencing bill takes effect and bars 14- and 15-year-olds from being tried as adults for certain serious crimes.

But Yolo Superior Court Judge Samuel McAdam wasn’t having it.

The scheduled five-day hearing that started Monday will determine whether Marsh’s prison term stands or whether he is to be retried in juvenile court, which would allow him to be released from custody at age 25. Appellate judges in their ruling said that outcome was a near-impossibility.

The court on Monday heard chilling details of the crime: Minutes after Marsh, then weeks shy of his 16th birthday, sliced open a screen and entered the Davis couple’s home, Northup, a longtime attorney and popular local musician, and Maupin, a Davis church official, were dead.

‘He can’t be rehabilitated,’ court told as it weighs retrying Davis pair’s killer as a minor

I watched 48 hours, "Portrait of a Killer" regarding this case last night. I have NEVER, EVER seen a case that gave me the creeps like this one. The only one that came close was Charlie Brandt. I was almost sick to my stomach thinking the new CA law prohibiting trying minors as adults (regardless of the heinous nature of the crimes) might include this now 21+ year old. He would be eligible to go scot free (as did Charlie Brandt). I can't understand why CA is all about criminal rights as opposed to victims. Daniel Marsh is pure evil. After listening to his police interview, I wanted to throw up. And, to think, he was "ALMOST" set free. I highly recommend watching this to anyone who believes children who murder (he was 15 at the time) should not be tried as adults. And, while you're at it, watch the Charlie Brandt story (on YT, I believe). Another horrific child murderer set free to murder again (and did).
