Respectfully snipped and underlined ~
The real shock to many, of course, is that a drug addict continued to choose drugs first while also being a mother. Of course, that's not a shock to me because I did the same thing for a year after the birth of my second child. That's not me at my best, of course, or my proudest days as a parent, but I "get" it.

Actually - the real shock for me, is not that she continued to use drugs after becoming a mother, but that she breastfed. Why would you do that?

I doubt she was doing it for the benefit to the baby...it's cheaper.

Alcohol tested, too?

I was on drugs when I took my children home and prescribed more to take with me (such is the nature c-section delivery). I would have hated for them to keep my children because of this.

No, not alcohol tested unless either parent shows obvious signs of addiction or the baby is born with foetal alcohol syndrome. Many families celebrate with alcohol when a new baby is born so testing would be unreliable. I did not mean testing for prescription drugs but for drugs like crystal meth, cocaine, heroin etc. If it was up to me I would test both parents and if they are separated anyone they are currently having a relationship with. So many little ones have been neglected, abused or killed because their parents or parent's boyfriend/girlfriend were high.

Two reasons - using drug/alcohol effects reasoning abilities and most infants don't die or have serious consequences when they take in breastmilk from a Mom who has ingested "other" substances (from caffeine to nicotine to wine to prescription drugs to illicit drugs).

From May 2009:

http://blogs.sacbee.com/crime/archives/2009/05/mother-pleads-n.html

A Sacramento woman whose infant daughter died last year after consuming methamphetamine-contaminated breast milk has pleaded no contest to a single count of felony child abuse...

Hoffart is expected to receive a four-year suspended state prison sentence, according to her attorney, Kate Carlson. Under the plea agreement, Hoffart will serve 90 days of a year-long county jail sentence, then be confined to house arrest for the remainder of the term. She also will be placed on four years probation...
