Weeks before her death, 23-year-old Olympic cyclist Kelly Catlin told her sister that she was struggling.

“On the phone she went back and forth from saying she was learning to appreciate things and enjoy life to saying if things didn’t change in a month, she was probably still going to kill herself,” Christine Catlin, 23, tells PEOPLE of her sister. “This was only two weeks ago. I thought we had more time. My last words to her were, ‘Please don’t kill yourself.’ “

Kelly, who helped the U.S. women’s pursuit team win the silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, died on Friday in her Stanford University dorm room in California. Christine says Kelly’s roommate found her and contacted authorities.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

She was suffering from the brutal effects of a concussion! This is really ultra sad.
So common with CTE in sports. Sad, Sad events.. rest in peace..

This is just awful.
I cannot imagine the pain she must have been feeling.
I wish someone could have stayed with her 24-7 during this dark time. Bless her soul, and all those who loved her.

what is CTE?

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a brain condition associated with repeated blows to the head. It is also associated with the development of dementia. Potential signs of CTE are problems with thinking and memory, personality changes, and behavioral changes including aggression and depression.

To add to Jim's point, alot of Sports players as highlighted in the NFL have committed suicide because of it. It is also a growing trend in Pro Wrestling as well. The issue back in the day for the NFL was that they knew about it allegedly and didn't tell. Now that players know, they can make a fair assestment on the risk vs reward more accuratly if that even makes sense. Chris Beniot was thought to have roid raged, however his brain was scanned and came back being that of an elderly person because of CTE. One of his finishing moves was a diving headbutt from the top rope. Also Chairshots to the head have been banned because of it.. Scary scenerio to say the least and sports like Soccer which have more cases, are not reported as much.

yes I've heard of it in football and wrestling ... just didn't realize what it was called

but Kelly was a cyclist - did she fall off her bike repeatedly?

Christine Catlin told the Washington Post on Sunday that a series of crashes, in which Kelly broke her arm and suffered a concussion, had had a profound effect on her sister. “She couldn’t train as well as she used to,” Christine Catlin said. “She had really bad headaches and was sensitive to light. Then she tried to commit suicide in January … she had written this lengthy email [to her family] and said her thoughts were racing all the time. She was suicidal, her thinking was really dark and she had taken to nihilism. We called police the moment we got the email, and they got there in time to save her that time.”
