Two missing boys: Chief of Police in California City gives new information on investigation

He says the police are still in contact with the adoptive parents, who have been cooperative throughout the investigation. He also confirmed that they are no longer in their home, and are now staying in Bakersfield.

“They’ve been back a couple of times to either take items out or whatever,” Walker said. “But we spot check it quite often and we don’t see a lot of activity in the house.”

He says there’s no possibility the boys, or the boys’ bodies, are in the house.

“We’ve looked everywhere possible in a house we could possibly look,” Walker said. “We brought in search dogs, cadaver dogs, any dog you can think of has been in that house and has not had any kids anywhere in the house.”

There’s still plenty of evidence and security footage to go through. So far, they’ve found nothing significant. Despite this, he says this case is far from getting cold.

“We’re not at a point now that we’re exhausted or want to give up.”

They previously had four supporting agencies on the investigation- but now they have two: the FBI and Bakersfield Police. Chief Walker says he appreciates search efforts from the community and encourages people to continue looking.

Two missing boys in California City: Chief of Police discusses investigation, adoptive parents, rumors

  1. LE has collected many, many, many pieces of what they think could possibly be evidence.
  2. They have questioned multiple people and searched multiple places.
  3. They are following up on almost every clue or tip that they get.
  4. At this point, they have nothing that indicates what happened to the boys or where they are.
  5. The chief is asked why there hasn't been any updates and he says they don't have a lot of new information that they can share.
  6. They are still processing evidence and have hours of security video, body cam footage, and interviews to go through.
  7. "Nothing big or earth shattering that I can share at this point."
  8. CCPD did not board up the West home or pay for it to be done.
  9. If they need to go back in the house they will obtain another warrant.
  10. The last time LE was in the house was about a week and a half ago and they retrieved one piece of evidence. They have taken items out of the shed as well. They have searched every corner of the house.
  11. The house is on a slab foundation.
  12. The number of agencies still working on the case is down to two - Bakersfield Police and the FBI. The FBI is processing evidence. CCPD is still the primary investigating agency. The DA's office has assisted in the case as well as the Kern County Sheriff.
  13. He welcomes private investigators but asks that they don't impede the investigation and that they share information so LE can do their follow-up as well.
  14. LE has brought search dogs, cadaver dogs, and any dogs you can think of in to search the house and there have been no hits.
  15. The adoptive parents are staying in Bakersfield and have been readily available to LE when needed. The chief did not want to disclose the location.
  16. LE has searched the attic, the chimney and the plumbing. They have looked everywhere in the house multiple times and found no secret rooms.
  17. The chief declined to comment as to whether or not they will make an arrest any time soon.
  18. The chief pursued acting and music in 2015 when he retired from LAPD in 2015 after 28 years. It was a hobby.
  19. "Somebody knows where these kids are."
  20. The search(es) in the desert amounted to about a 5-mile radius.

Polygraph test was requested from missing California City boys adoptive parents, officials confirm (turnto23.com)

Cal City Police Chief Jon Walker confirmed the Wests were asked to take the test, the day after the couple reported 3-year-old Orson and 4-year-old Orrin West missing.

... here's what authorities have done so far in the case, according to Walker.
  • Excavated the parents backyard, to make sure the boys weren't buried underneath
  • Used search dogs which found the scent of the boys inside the home, but not outside as they were reported to be before disappearing
  • Used cadaver dogs inside the home -- no scent of human remains detected.
  • Search warrant used to collect items from the home, including adoptive parents cell phones, ipads and other electronic devices. Phones have since been returned.
  • Adoptive parents van tested with luminol - no indication of blood found.
  • Spoke neighbors in the area. No positive ID of any of the Wests 6 children. Walker says the family only moved to California City in September. They previously lived in Bakersfield.
  • Searched adoptive parents previous properties in Bakersfield
  • Searched former Saddle Ranch Resort property
According to Walker, the last time the boys were seen by anyone other than the Wests was by their grandmother in Bakersfield. Walker was unable to comment on when that occurred.

Before that, Walker said someone other than family also saw the boys in Bakersfield. Walker was unable to comment on that date as well.

Full 30-minute interview with Chief Walker who confirms where and by whom the boys were last seen, other than the adoptive parents. Walker confirms a polygraph test was requested from the adoptive parents. Walker also talks about surveillance footage and the timeframe of when boys were reported missing.

11:45 - Reporter: Has there been any suspect or suspects named in this case so far? Chief: No.

11:50 - Reporter: Any persons of interest at this point? Chief: Of course.

11:55 - Reporter: Who? Chief: I can't disclose that.

The West's six children range from age 3 to age 10 - two biological children, two foster children, and two adopted children; Orson and Orrin.

The Chief says at the time of the boys disappearance, the other children were at their Grandmother's for a holiday visit. "That's how it was explained to me."

UPDATE: LE is also investigating inside the home.
  • Various agencies are gathering "statistical" data of the perimeter of the home.
  • Chief Walker said they are using drone imaging and also gathering more information of the back gate, which the parents said was left open.

According to California City Police Chief Jon Walker, investigators were gathering "statistical" information of the home's perimeter, while using drones from above for imaging. Measurements and photographs were taken from the inside and outside of the home.

Walker said personnel also examined the back gate of the home, which was allegedly left open when the boys disappeared from the backyard, according to adoptive parents.

Authorities were also investigating inside the home, but Walker was unable to disclose what they were working on.

  • Authorities have asked multiple people, other than the adoptive parents to take a lie detector test.
  • Chief Walker confirmed that individuals "close to the investigation" were asked to take the test.
  • Walker did not disclose who those individuals are, when they were asked to take the test, or whether anyone took or denied the test.
  • He also confirmed that the recent human trafficking operations in Bakersfield and Los Angeles have "no correlation at all" to the missing boys.

The small community of California City, a desert town in Kern County, has been haunted for over a month by the disappearance of two young residents, Orrin and Orson West.

The young boys went missing shortly before Christmas and, in the weeks since, police have uncovered little by way of clues. As frustration mounts in California City, signs have been erected along highly trafficked corridors. One reads: “Where are the boys?”
