"I Am Woman", the composition was the result of Helen Reddy’s search for a song that would express her growing passion for female empowerment. In a 2003 interview in Australia’s Sunday Magazine (published with the Sunday Herald Sun and Sunday Telegraph),[2] she explained:

I couldn't find any songs that said what I thought being woman was about. I thought about all these strong women in my family who had gotten through the Depression and world wars and drunken, abusive husbands. But there was nothing in music that reflected that. The only songs were 'I Feel Pretty' or that dreadful song 'Born A Woman'. (The 1966 hit by Sandy Posey had observed that if you're born a woman "you're born to be stepped on, lied to, cheated on and treated like dirt. I'm glad it happened that way".) These are not exactly empowering lyrics. I certainly never thought of myself as a songwriter, but it came down to having to do it.

Reddy’s own long years on stage had also fueled her contempt for men who belittled women, she said. "Women have always been objectified in showbiz. I'd be the opening act for a comic and as I was leaving the stage he'd say, 'Yeah, take your clothes off and wait for me in the dressing room, I'll be right there'. It was demeaning and humiliating for any woman to have that happen publicly."

She said: "I remember lying in bed one night and the words, 'I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman', kept going over and over in my head. That part I consider to be divinely inspired. I had been chosen to get a message across." Pressed on who had chosen her, she replied: "The universe." The next day she wrote the lyric and handed it to Australian guitarist Ray Burton to put it to music.

''Reddy's death comes less than three weeks after the release of a biopic about her life called I Am Woman. The film's director, Unjoo Moon, said the film resulted in a seven-year friendship with Reddy.''

"I will forever be grateful to Helen for teaching me so much about being an artist, a woman and a mother," she said in a statement. "She paved the way for so many and the lyrics that she wrote for I Am Woman changed my life forever like they have done for so many other people and will continue to do for generations to come. She will always be a part of me and I will miss her enormously."

A performer since childhood, Reddy was part of a show-business family in Melbourne. She won a contest that brought her to the United States and launched her recording career, although she first had to overcome ideas about her sound.

"In my earlier days in Australia, I was considered to be more of a jazz singer," she told the AP in 1991. "When I won the contest that brought me to this country, one person said, `The judges didn't feel you could have a recording career because you don't have a commercial sound."'

Reddy retired from performing in the 1990s and returned to Australia, getting her degree in clinical hypnotherapy. She later returned to California, where in the 1970s she had served on a statewide Parks and Recreation Commission, and returned to the stage occasionally.''

This is Toni Lamond. Helen's half sister. When Helen started out, Toni was the bigger name here, in Australia and every news report about Helen always mentioned Toni.

No way! We learn so much here, and of course not taking away from Ms. Reddy's brilliant life I about freaked when I saw ""One Way Ticket".

Mama Cass covered that, and I never knew until I saw this Brit film called "Beautiful Thing"? There's a young girl obsessed with Mama Cass and sings that song through the film. It never did anything for Mama Cass, but I sing it! Soooooo cool to know Ms. Reddy did it. That it was hers.

Never, ver do I challenge an Australian when it comes to talent. Never. I mean anyone who produced Hugh Jackman, and Peter Allen? However, I'm gonna check our Bandstand against your Bandstand and see where we stand. LOL My mom was a regular on Bandstand dancing away. I may be wrong because of my "sometimers", but I'm going with it was a originally a Philly based show.

No matter. Clean, fun, talent filled, teenage crush, phenomenal dancing show which I wish these kids could have today.

Toni Lamond, known for her roles in Annie Get Your Gun and My Fair Lady, dies aged 93​

Australian performer Toni Lamond has died aged 93 after an extensive career in cabaret, theatre, film and television.

The performer's many accolades include an Order of Australia for Service to the Entertainment Industry, a Centenary Medal for Service to the Arts Community and a Variety Club of Australia Award.

Lamond was born in 1932 in Sydney to comedian Stella Lamond and actor Joe Lawman.

She started her professional career aged 10, when she sang on the radio.

During her career, she starred in numerous Australian theatre productions, including Oliver!, Annie Get Your Gun and My Fair Lady.

Her television credits include Number 96, The Unisexers and The Last Frontier.

She was often a guest on variety and talk shows, including The Graham Kennedy Show, The Mike Walsh Show, The Bert Newton Show and Good Morning Australia.

Lamond's sister, Helen Reddy, who was also a famous singer and actress, died in 2020 aged 78.
