Jury convicts second defendant of murder in homeless killings
LOS ANGELES -- A 75-year-old woman was convicted Thursday of murdering a homeless man to collect life insurance, but the jury said it was deadlocked on another murder charge and a conspiracy count.
The judge ordered more deliberations in an effort to conclude a trial that has spun a bizarre tale of a murder-for-profit scheme carried out by two elderly women.

Without saying which way it was leaning, the jury said it was deadlocked 11-1 on the charge that Rutterschmidt murdered Vados and 10-2 on conspiracy to murder him for financial gain.

Superior Court Judge David Wesley ordered jurors to return Monday to try to decide the remaining counts. But he also replaced one juror with an alternate, meaning talks on those counts must start over from the beginning.

The replaced juror told the court he had preplanned travel and could not serve any longer

Mon Apr 21, 2008 6:38pm EDTLOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 75-year-old woman, already convicted along with her 77-year-old accomplice of killing a homeless man, was found guilty on Monday of murdering a second man in the so-called "Black Widows" case.
The verdict means that Olga Rutterschmidt, 75, and Helen Golay, 77, have now both been convicted on all of the charges against them -- two counts each of first-degree murder and conspiracy.
Local media nicknamed them the "Black Widows" because prosecutors said they took in the homeless men only to murder them for life insurance money. The case stirred memories of the 1944 film "Arsenic and Old Lace" starring Cary Grant.
Both women face life in prison when they are sentenced later this year for the murders of 73-year-old Paul Vados and 50-year-old Kenneth McDavid.

Two elderly women were sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole, for taking out insurance polices on two homeless men, then arranging to have them killed in hit-and-run accidents in Los Angeles alleys.

Superior Court Judge David Wesley on Tuesday sentenced 77-year-old Helen Golay and 75-year-old Olga Rutterschmidt to two consecutive life terms each, without possibility of parole.
