A juror says she's followed the first trial on TV news, and recently watched a 60 minutes special on the case. She also researched the company b/c she was curious about the machine & that it didn't work. When asked if she can be fair to Balwani, "it may be an issue," she says.

Some more jurors say they heard about the case from various news sources, NPR, CNN, NBC, Google news and an HBO doc. Another juror said she saw the trailer for The Dropout, but hasn't watched the show, and they all say they think they can be impartial.

One juror learned about the case about a year ago from various news sources including CNN and a post on Reddit. He says he can be fair to both sides. "Those headlines are headlines. They might give you a little glimpse, but they aren't the whole story."

Another juror says proudly that he reads The Mercury News (s/o@ethanbaron)
every day, so he's heard about the case, but he thinks he can be an impartial juror. The judge notes he once worked as a paper boy delivering The Mercury News way back when.

We're taking a break, but two jurors stayed to talk to the judge. A distressed juror says he reported for jury service because he didn't want to get arrested and go to jail, but he needs to pick his child up from school and there's no one else to do it.

The judge excuses the juror for hardship, and assures him he will not be arrested. Judge Davila also thanks him for reporting for jury duty, and notes that he learned of an attorney who was summoned (presumably today) and didn't come to court to report for jury duty. (Ruh-roh.)

Pro tip: If you are a practicing attorney and summoned to federal court for jury duty, ya better show up!
