UNSOLVED CA - Redding, Skeletal remains found near City Hall, Jul/Aug'19

City of Redding police officers and Shasta County Coroner’s officials are investigating after another set of human remains was located in a canal across just east of Redding City Hall. The gruesome discovery was made this morning, Monday, Aug. 5.

Officials have confirmed that the remains found today are human, and include an arm bone and other remains.

Redding PD officers were dispatched to the canal off Cypress Ave. around 8 a.m., after receiving reports of suspicious activity in the area.

When officials arrived they interviewed several people who reported finding the remains.

A Shasta County Coroner’s Office representative told KRCR News this morning the bones found today are human. However, officials have not confirmed if the bones found this morning are connected to partial human remains recovered in the same general area Tuesday, July 30.

Last Tuesday morning’s investigation began after remains were found floating in the water near the Cypress Ave. bridge at Park Marina Dr.

As their investigation was getting underway last week, Redding police Sgt. Levi Solada told Record Searchlight that Shasta County Sheriff’s dive team members had pulled the remains from a canal that runs just west of the Sacramento River.

The investigation began around 5 a.m., after a citizen “flagged down” a police officer along Park Marina Dr. to report the discovery.

The person told the officer they saw “what they believed was some type of suspicious item in the water,” Redding Cpl. Timothy Renault reported that day. “Due to the darkness, it was difficult to see what was going on down there.”

Officials at the time were not able to determined how long the body had been in the water and could not confirm the person’s gender or age.

Officials remain at the scene of today’s discovery and have not released any further details regarding either of their active and ongoing investigation.

Since these were found in the same area, but not known if related, I posted both here, until they figure out if it is one person or two.

Appears that they have some discrepancy with the dates of the first set found.... one says July 30 the others updates are saying July 20th (but article is written on the 30th)

Police investigating human remains found in Redding canal

UPDATE 2:47 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2019 - Authorities have confirmed that the remains found in the canal are from a human.

Investigators are now working to identify the body. There is no word yet on how long the remains have been in the canal.

REDDING, Calif. - Authorities are investigating reports of possible human remains found in a canal under the Cypress Avenue Bridge.

Police said a passerby reported seeing bone fragments in the water early Tuesday morning.

Divers are at the scene recovering what they are calling body parts from the canal. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the body parts are human.

Redding is much closer to the many missing people in Humboldt County than to Roseville. Plus Redding is a city with its own situations. Agree with @Lilibet that it's unlikely to be Susan.

There have been many unidentified bodies found within the city of Redding. This is a direct result of the presence of a large homeless population and the existence of many large, heavily vegetated undeveloped tracks of land interspersed between developed neighborhoods. Homeless people camp discreetly in these undeveloped areas and then come out into the town where they socialize, receive support and otherwise do what homeless people do. These undeveloped areas, like the one this body was found, are particularly useful for people who want to do drugs without being seen. They can score their dope, duck into the brush to shot up or whatever, and return to the city park to enjoy their nod. Sometimes things go wrong and they OD right in their hiding places. Bodies have been found near homes, businesses and even City Hall. Other homeless people tend to find the bodies but they are often more interested in collecting whatever may be of use on the bodies (money, drugs, paraphernalia or id’s) than reporting the bodies to the authorities. These bodies turn up so frequently and most are easily identified so that they do not warrant any media attentions.

Homelessness is a huge problem in Redding as it is in much of California. What no one can come to agreement on is whether the “ problem” is the socio-economic factors that cause people to become homeless or just the existence of the homeless people.
