I don't understand not being able to climb up from the trail when the tide comes in - unless he fell and could not.

The trail is the beach beneath steep cliffs in most places. Practically impossible to climb. Plenty of people hike the Lost Coast successfully, but timing is crucial. He hurt his back and may have done that trying to climb to get above the tide. Poor man. :(

Further north, a lost hiker’s body was recovered from a crevasse. The Southern Humboldt County Technical Rescue team searching for Rick was involved in her recovery. They are topnotch volunteers! As a former resident of Southern Humboldt, I have to give a shout-out to the rock-solid residents who are a counterpoint to those portrayed in the Netflix series “Murder Mountain.”

Quoting:

Once back to the parking area, the Humboldt County coroner’s office and the Sheriff’s Department took charge of the body and the SHCTR team could begin to relax. Since last Wednesday through Monday, the volunteers had only had one day off from searching for this woman and for a missing Canadian man.

The team was eager to eat as they hadn’t had time all day. Even though the the two searches had exhausted them both emotionally and physically, Ostrow said, “We feel good about doing our part of the job well.”

Ostrow explained, “It has been hard on the Team, spending days scouring the coastline without being able to successfully resolve the search for Rick Eastep. While [Monday]’s mission has come to a tragic conclusion, there is a peace of mind that comes from knowing that at the very least, we can help provide this woman’s family with some small measure of closure.”

I don’t see anything new on this case. I know he’s likely washed out to sea. This is so sad. I think of him often. Bummer. jmo

Sneaker waves are expected along the coast tomorrow.
Can someone please tell me what a sneaker wave is? Just a very brief reply would be great! Thanks!

There is one thing I have learned on WS over the years... Do not go through and definitely do not stop in Humboldt County. This place scares me! Cliffs, waves, people... to much danger!

The trail IS the beach in that area and it's backed by sheer cliffs you can't climb. That's why there are warnings posted about paying close attention to the tides. But he fell and had a back injury so it may have rendered him unable to leave that segment of the trail.

I found an obituary for him, but doesn't look like they ever found his body
