On March 12, 1978, a group of sailors walking along an edge of a cliff in San Diego, CA taking photos found the decedent lying among the rocks below.

The decedent was a white male, approximately 25-35 years old. He was 5’6” and weighed 131 pounds. He had brown hair, hazel eyes, and a reddish beard/mustache.

He was clad in the following clothes: Levi pants, a light blue Levi jacket with embroidery of flowers and trees on the back yoke, and a brown sleeveless t-shirt. There were no underwear, shoes or socks on the body.

Around the neck was a round-shaped pendant, approx. 4" in diameter, with a blue back-ground and gold circles, and he wording "Pat Flanagan Experimental Sensor 24k," inscribed on the edge of the pendant.

The only identified case listing at this time is on NAMUS, #99704.

Looks like he was wearing a ghost hunting pendant. How odd.

Don't know what version of the pendant this young man was wearing, but price could range anywhere from 10$ to 279$ given an article in The Atlantic Constitution, 9 Apr 78, pg 208 - snip below, which also mentions products contained a serial #. The article is some 4 pages long - this small snip does give a little background in the intro on the inventor.

Did the pendant found on the UP have a serial number? I see that Patrick Flanagan has a library. He died in 2019, but I wonder if they have kept any of that information. I hope that it's okay that I emailed them to see if they might have the records of the serial numbers. Here's the library link: Patrick Flanagan Library

Here is a person describing their interaction with the "sensor". Bizarre
After reading that users experience, a scenario involving some form of ritual and/or hallucination gone wrong seems very possible.

Hi all, I heard back from Gisele at the Pat Flanagan Museum. She is going to research tomorrow and get back to me. She also sent two photos of a pendent which I'm attaching here. It doesn't quite fit the description as the UP, but it's dated 1976 and you can see that there is a registration number.
I told her that I think someone would have to contact the San Diego ME's office to see if they have a photo of it or if it does have a registration number on it as it's not mentioned in the description on NamUs. I couldn't find an email for the San Diego ME, so if anyone wants to call, please do.

If you look at these photos, they match the description and do not have a serial number on them.

I’m wondering if there were different sets of them over the years. I know there were different metals bronze, silver, gold.

Quick recon. I may do one without the beard later.

Gisele emailed me back and they have a sensor in their collection that matches the description, just like the one from megs' link. Unfortunately, no serial numbers on it. It's probably going to be a dead end, but it's still really interesting! Gisele sent me some more documents on the sensors, too. I feel like that gives us more of an idea of what kind of guy the UP is/was.

I'm fascinated by the "sensor" and some of the stories that I have read.
Every time I see it, it reminds me of a scene from one of the TV procedural drama's where the woman is having a mental break and is at the top of a building believing she can fly, and the main character talks her down. I can't help but wonder if he was standing there, either having some kind of mental health crisis or perhaps even intoxicated, and the powerful, energy of the sensor was telling him he could fly? JMOO, but I can't get the scenario out of my head.
