Details of Disappearance
Phelan was last seen when he checked out of the Six Pence Inn in Tustin, California on October 18, 1981. He has never been heard from again. He was was upset over a divorce and other personal problems at the time of his 1981 disappearance.

I lived in Tustin for a few years so I was curious where he was last seen. It looks like the Six Pence Inn is now Key Inn & Suites. Notably, the location is right next to the 5 Freeway, so if he was an avid hitchhiker as stated in the MP report, he could have easily gotten a ride and have gone almost anywhere.

I have the impression that on his last trip he met someone who would be the last person to see him alive... I imagine that the possibility of a serial killer hitchhiking is great... with all the serial killers on the loose in the United States... maybe it was just a matter of time, nothing more...
