Nicholas Mont was formally charged Tuesday with killing his former wife, Sharon Mont, the dean of National University in Sacramento, who was fatally shot at her Rancho Cordova home last week.

Nicholas Mont, 60, was arraigned in Sacramento County Superior Court on a count of homicide with a special allegation of using a handgun. He did not enter a plea and said he could not afford a lawyer.

Judge Emily E. Vasquez appointed Deputy Public Defender Linda Parisi to represent Mont and continued the hearing to Feb. 15. At the request of Deputy District Attorney Donna K. Gissing, the case was transferred to the court's domestic violence unit.

Mont was returned to Sacramento County Jail, where he is being held without bail.
