Yes, Katy, one of the hardest things to do is start from where someone frequents (like their house). It can be done of course, but does require training for it so the dogs really learn to ignore all the other underlying trails. A handlers' favorite trail is the one in a nice cool damp mossy forest where the MP has NEVER been, lol.

We are 17 days out now, pushing the limits, but it wouldn't hurt to bring a dog in that has car trailing experience and try. I would have (or would now) tried drop trailing from where the bag and phone were found as well as the intersections that lead onto 101 and Bailey heading up into the hills. (And for all I know they did and I just didn't hear about it!)

I am not sure what 'drop trailing is' but I saw a picture of K-9 dogs walking in lines, fanning out from the area where the phone was found. And they did the same thing from where the bag was found. But it was reported that they did not find any other 'information' from those searches. whatever that means.

:waitasec: not that it matters but it's 11 days isn't it? She was home the night of the 15th.

Oh boy, this is one big ole can of worms.... Yes, I remember very very clearly.
Myself along with every other handler I have spoken to regarding this do not believe under the conditions and the length of time that the dogs were tracking Amber's scent.
In terms of Lacey Peterson, sadly that dog was also raked through the coals and completely discredited. It got very ugly and was very sad for handlers all over and what we stood for. The public really didn't follow the aftermath.
Yes, special training is required for car trailing, though any dog might happen to follow one from time to time. It is still very hit and miss because variables come into play BIG TIME. The amount of time scent is going to hold on pavement, especially in the heat and weather can be greatly reduced compared to say the woods. Thus shortening the window. I could go on and on, but don't want to completely go off topic!

Yes I knew it was controversial, to say the least...and probably made to sound a certain way to the public...was just wondering if there was anything to it at all, which you have answered, thanks.

Drop trailing is where you take the dog to somewhere other than the PLS (place last seen) and see if they pick up a scent and can then follow it.

Whoops, I have no idea why I typed that number! Thank you. I went back and corrected it. It's still a very old car trail, but 6 less days definitely is better! The good thing here is what is on the sides of the road and the weather. This is not a dry, arid situation with little roadside vegetation. The grass on the side of the road, combined with the light rain help.
A car trail is a much fainter trail than that of someone walking (for obvious reasons).

Ok, good. So it looks like they did try that technique at least.

Local news just reporting that a teen from San Jose (Willow Glen) was almost kidnapped this AM. The Hispanic man about 5'7 used a stun gun and attempted to pull the girl into the car.

She fought (Yeah) and he got in his car and drove away...

Please, please teach your children to fight (bite, kick, scream) and never move from the spot. This is an example..in most cases the perp will leave.

I read that exhaust fumes from a running squad car can kill the scent. Does that apply only if done while the dogs are there?
or if a patrol car or two say sat in the drive for an hour running
then the dogs were brought later could that kill the scent trail?
I'm sure it depends on the dog. I trust them so I don't feel like the scent was killed, but i think about the # of vehicles that respond to missing children and wonder...

Do not park running vehicles where the exhaust fumes
will saturate the starting point. Exhaust fumes can
destroy scent and affect the canine’s sense of smell.

reasons I am skeptical: of course moo

1) she was seen yesterday trying to hitchhike- where has she been the last week and why hitchhike now?

2) A lot of girls in CA fit her general description- in fact the majority-

3) She had multiple backpacks with her- I would think family would notice if multiple backpacks were missing

4) She might have run away to be with someone but she was seen alone and hitchhiking alone. In other words- I don't think she would have risked it all as a runaway to be by herself.

The truck that picked her up yesterday was a black lifted one. Watsonville is fairly small and I think we will hear from people soon about this truck.

I am doing a non ono today Popping in and out of work and hoping of not getting caught.Anyway I was thinking last night trying to get to sleep about the phone and bag . In order for the cell phone to be thrown from the driver side of the car it would had to cross at least another lane of traffic.
As to the bag it had to be placed there becuase of the way the clothes were still folded. If it was thrown the clothes surely would not still not have been neatly folded as we were told.IMHO
Sorry I have not read all post since about 9 last night someoe might have said something like this.
Back to work I go :seeya:

The attacker fled in a red compact car with tinted windows. He was described as Hispanic, in his 30s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds.

The suspect, described as a white man in his 60s, first approached the girl around 3:30 p.m. last Wednesday, as she got off her school bus near Tice Valley Boulevard and Crest Avenue in unincorporated Walnut Creek, according to police.
He drove alongside the girl in a faded red older model compact sedan

We have two serious attempts of kidnapping of two teenage girls in the area in the last four months..and now we have Sierra. Is there a connection?

I doubt that the girl spotted on E Lake in Watsonville was Sierra, but just for clarity, E Lake turns into Hecker Pass Rd (152) which drops out in Gilroy to 101.
