SAN DIEGO -- A small plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday, setting about 15 homes on fire and forcing the evacuations of homes along several blocks, authorities said.

"We have jet fuel all over the place," Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy said during a news conference. "Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now."

He said "there is a direct hit to multiple homes" in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood.

It was not known if there were any injuries.

The small private jet crashed seconds before landing at about 3:45 am. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane was flying from Wichita to Montgomery Gibbs Executive Airport when it crashed. It was roughly 500 feet in the air at its last radar check-in, according to the FAA.

"A Cessna 550 crashed near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in California, around 3:45 a.m.local time on Thursday, May 22. The number of people on board is unknown at this time," the FAA said in a statement.

At least two people have died after a business jet crashed into a San Diego neighborhood that houses military families during foggy weather early Thursday, authorities said.

It is unclear how many people were onboard the jet, but all the fatalities appear to be from the plane, San Diego Fire Assistant Chief Dan Eddy said during a press conference on Thursday.

The crash set nearly a dozen homes on fire, forcing families to evacuate along several blocks, authorities said.

From your link:

Captain Robert Heely, Commanding Officer of Naval Base San Diego, said the neighborhood is “one of the largest military housing units in the world.”

“Certainly we have a lot of military families that are impacted,” Heely said, before adding his condolences to the families of those on board the plane.

According to the flight tracking site FlightAware, the Citation took off from Teterboro Airport, just outside of New York City, late Wednesday night.

@Niner , I can't recall when you said you moved to Latvia -- I think you said around 7-8 years ago? So roughly 2017-2018?

Here are Lisa Scottoline's most recent psychological thriller books:

The Truth About the Devlins (2024)
What Happened To The Bennetts (2022)
Someone Knows (2019) (I think this is my favorite of hers, or close!)
After Anna (2018)
One Perfect Lie (2017)

I think you meant to post this on the Side bar - but who cares! LOL!

The last book I read was 2015 Corrupted. So thanks for these new ones. Will add them to my wish list! :)
edited to add - it will be 9 years (!!!) in November (7th) I have been here in Latvia.

OOOOooops! Deleted my post here, put it where it belongs. Need more coffee!

Authorities confirmed earlier today that there are "multiple fatalities" among the plane passengers, and they are still confirming who was on that flight.

No local residents were seriously injured, and almost 100 people have been evacuated from the area.

Drummer Dave Williams may have been piloting the plane

There are some irregular adjustents in altitude just prior to the crash and the available data shows an elevation of about 2500 ft and 192kt speed just before the crash, which some people are commenting seems excessive for that plane.

LA Times reports there were 6 passengers on the plane, and no survivors have been found. There is also evidence the plane hit two power lines, possibly on the ridge top near the accident and there was very dense fog at the time, including on the ground where the plane crashed when rescue personnel arrived.

"The music agency Sound Talent Group said Thursday that three of its employees, including co-founder Dave Shapiro, died on the private plane that crashed into a San Diego neighborhood.

San Diego authorities earlier said two people had died. The total number of fatalities is unknown, but six people were on board the plane, according to the Federal Aviation Administration."

NTSB press conference this afternoon says that the plane struck two power lines about 2 miles east of the crash and there were plane parts found underneath the power lines.

Wow. Still dark outside, dense fog, power lines. I wonder if it was just the wheels and struts or if more of the undercarriage was ripped loose. Could there be other bodies that fell from the plane before the crash site?

The power lines are just up the hill from Sample Street where most all the damage occurred. I'd guess less than 1/2 mile from the crash site. There is also a ballfield with their lights on poles just after the power lines.

The power lines have those red balls on them, but no obvious flashing lights. The red balls would have been impossible to see at 4:00 am with dense ground fog and the airfield with less than 1/2 mile visibility.

Is there some reason this thread does not come up under the What's New or Watched Threads category ?

I seriously doubt that. He was just posing in the copilots seat. This particular model of aircrft can be flown single pilot. I have a type rating for the Citation (CE500) and had to take my checkride with the FAA single pilot to demonstrate preficiency, otherwise I would have had to use a qualified second in command. It's quite common to let a non pilot rated passenger sit in that seat to see what it's like but there's no way he would have let him fly an approach.

The pilot was the owner of the aircraft who changed the registrqation of the aircraft to N666DS (his initials) in 2024, likely when he purchased it. He probably didn't have a lot of experience flying it based on when he got his rating (public info on www.faa.gov). You have to search to find it, but he also had an accident back June 26, 2020 in a Pitts (high performance single engine plane). which he also owned (N621MS). Kathyn's report has a synopsis which states the aircraft went off the runway at Gillispe Field (KSEE) on takeoff. No report was made to the NTSB. There's more to the story, but not something I can state here. Aerotek Pitts S-1T Special, N621MS: Incident occurred June 26, 2020 at Gillespie Field Airport (KSEE), El Cajon, San Diego County, California

In my opinion, he hit the powerlilnes for the simple reason he was too low on that stage of the RNAV approach, below the required minimums for that segment based on ADS-B data, the altitude of the terrain he was over, and the approach plate profile. Inattention? Medical Issue? Poor airmanship? Improper altimeter setting (a possibility with no ASOS data available)? Trying to duck below minimums to "take a look"? (it happens and usually doesn't end well). It's WAY too early to tell.

The weather at nearby airports provided to him by ATC was legal for an ILS approach there but BELOW the landing minimum for visibility at the airport he was landing at which required 3/4 mile vis, not the standard half mile, and it's unknown why he didn't ask for the ILS approach at his destination which has lower minimums than the RNAV. The approach lights were NOTAMed out of service. Not essential, but in fog, you really want those.

I'll wait for the board's call on this but I won't be at all surprised by what they come out with, I'm sure.
