Clanton said at the end of the preliminary hearing that prosecutors failed to show any criminal intent in the killing and argued Pedreros is delusional and shows severe symptoms of psychosis. "Nobody knows, or will ever know, what happened at the river," he said.

But Trinity County District Attorney Michael Harper said there's no evidence that Pedreros is delusional and he believes a jury will convict her of first-degree murder. "It's clear her intent was to kill Sophie and possibly herself," due to possible prior abuse by her husband, he said.

Clanton disagreed, saying it's "hard to avoid acknowledging there's something mentally wrong here."

The two court appointed psychologists have not turned their reports into the court yet.

Pedreros, who remains in custody in Trinity County jail without bail, will return to Superior Court Oct. 18 for an arraignment and possible setting of a trial date.

Pedreros' attorney, Russell Clanton, and Trinity County District Attorney Michael Harper both said Tuesday that doctors are still working to psychologically evaluate Pedreros. Clanton said that process will likely continue until after he returns from a fact-finding trip to Chile, where his client lived until she moved with her husband to McKinleyville in 2008.

Clanton said he's leaving at the end of the month on a court-funded trip to visit Pedreros' native country, where he plans to interview doctors and family members and to visit the hospitals where Pedreros stayed while institutionalized there.

WEAVERVILLE — A Humboldt County woman who stood trial for murder was ordered today to be committed to Napa State Hospital in connection with the drowning of her 2½-year-old daughter in the Trinity River in 2011.

A Trinity County jury last month convicted Claudia Pedreros, 31, of McKinleyville of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of child abuse and an enhancement in the death of her child, Sophie, but later determined she was insane at the time of her daughter's death.

Deputy District Attorney Adam Grace said Monday Pedreros could stay at Napa State Hospital for a minimum of six months as she's being evaluated and treated, but added she could stay there for as long as 11-years, four-months.

So another case where they are released when they are "cured."
So she could be out in 6 months for killing her child... once they give her some meds.
But then when she gets out, what if she doesn't continue taking the meds?
What if she becomes insane again and kills someone else?

Resources are spread thin here in California, but hopefully she will qualify for a case worker to monitor meds, perhaps live in an assisted living type home, etc... Not sure how I feel about this case. Sadness and confusion I guess. :-(
