I followed the case during the trial, although it was not televised. On another forum there was much discussion. The reason I thought the brother was guilty was a link(that is no longer available, as a matter of fact the whole forum has been erased except for the title) that detectives found the word "kill" etched into Stephanie's window sill.

I wish they would have the entire video that's shown on local TV, but there's always some left out. Below are 2 links of videos where Tuite's former lawyer explains how one of the brother's friends went in and confessed on his own.

I was watching TV the day Tuite escaped during the trial and the news stations put out notices about how "dangerous he is", but when they caught him he had been calmly riding a bus and gave them no problems cuffing him.

I feel he is innocent. I hope he gets a fair trial next time. He may be mentally ill, but I don't believe he is a killer. After the trial they showed his mother and sister and how heartbroken they were.

I lived in SD when this whole fiasco happened. What a tragedy for the family. I cannot believe it's still going on. I thought Truit had been in prison this whole time?

I have made all my sons watch the "Interogation of Michael Crowe" . I am very PRO victim, but NOT at the expense of innocent persons being coerced into false confessions.

This is my "go to" case for why innocent persons should ALL invoke their right to a lawyer.

IMO, The Interrogation of Michael Crowe was absolutely heartbreaking to watch....once was all I could take! I have seen where Court TV/True TV have replayed it....I can't bare to watch it again. Michael was just a young boy and literally browbeat into making a false confession. Just awful.

Yes, it doesn't seem right for them to interrogate a child under 18 without a parent present. However, if you watch the video from this link, note at 2:28 Tuite's lawyer talked about a voluntary questioning where Josh Treadway admitted what happened. The trial was not televised so I don't know if it was admitted into evidence or not.

Joshua Treadway was also under 18, and also interrogated without a parent or lawyer present. When Tuite's lawyer calls the questioning "voluntary" what he means is that Treadway's parents waived his rights for him.

I wouldn't take the word of Tuite's defense lawyer as gospel, obviously he will try and use the false confessions those two boys made to create reasonable doubt for his client.

I couldn't agree with you more. It was horrifying. My stomach was in knots watching that poor kid being coerced into confessing to a crime he didn't commit. And this wasn't just some random murder - it was his sister. So not only is he torn up over her death, he is not being accused of committing it.

That was probably one of the most gut-wrenching things I've ever watched, all that long ago and still to this day. As a mother, it made me want to bust in there and rescue him.

Have you ever watched the interrogation of Michael Crowe? It's pretty clear that he "confesses" only after being bullied and lied to for HOURS. He has to be told what to confess!

Yes I saw some of his confession as well as the movie. It happens in most of the true crime shows I've seen as well. Some of the interrogators yell, use heaters on high, and various other methods.

ID had a series of a true detective from Texas, I think, who never used those methods and still got confessions, which evidence eventually proved their guilt.

I never saw the movie, but I did watch the interrogation. It was very clear to me that Michael didn't have a clue as to what had happened, had no involvement in what had happened, and was a young guy in grief over the death of his sister who was being harangued and lied to by police officers. The poor kid was told that the knife that killed his sister was found in his room, with sister's blood all over it.

I don't know whether the transient had anything to do with the death of this little girl, but I am convinced that Michael did NOT have any involvement.
