A dove hunter found a badly burned human body in a large trash bin near Stockton on Thursday morning, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department said.

The body was found on the Upper Jones Tract off Highway 4, just outside the city. Deputy Les Garcia said other bodies have been dumped in the same area in the past.

The body is burned beyond recognition; authorities do not know how long it has been there.

San Joaquin County sheriff's investigators are working the case as a homicide. They hope to identify the body through dental records. An autopsy is scheduled for today, Garcia said.

"It could take a few days. It could take a few weeks" to identify the body, Garcia said.
