Sumi was last seen on 8 September 2010, but wasn't reported missing until October 2010. She is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 200 pounds, and is Native American. The Hoopa Tribe has conducted a massive search for her.

Nothing is clear on this; There are no 24 hour venues or shelter services in her town. The next obvious choice is to stay with friends or family members, yet she was reported missing nearly a month after the fact and all dates are estimated. Initially there was a big push in the local media for assistance, in the first year there was a united front to canvas the valley floor with volunteers and law enforcement among both the County and Tribe.

For reasons beyond this case a dispute over jurisdiction, as California is a PL 280 State and Hoopa is a reservation, ultimately granted rights to the County where the search effort has gone stagnant. Unless the Hoopa Valley Tribe reaches an agreement for Cross-Deputization with the Humboldt County Sheriff there will be no County presence on Reservation land.

Additionally, the last known companions will be of no assistance now.

In the following article Juan's Uncle reports that they brought shovels into the search effort. It went unreported that the digging itself happened on the family property resulting in no further cooperation on their part.

The relations between sheriff and reservations is indeed a touchy one in the Emerald Triangle. In Mendocino County, it has led to a proliferation of tribal police forces on reservations. Round Valley, Shodokai, and Coyote Valley now have their own forces.

Unmentioned by our new local source is the antipathy that usually exists between the FBI and many tribes. That's another whole ball of wax.

<<Sumi was 33 years old when she was last seen walking from Hoopa Elementary School in September of 2010 in Hoopa, California. Authorities have not released much information regarding Sumi's disappearance with the exception of a press release in November of 2010 asking for information regarding the whereabouts of Robert Hodge Jr and Debra Jealous of Him, both from Hoopa. The Humboldt County Sheriff's office was careful to note that neither person is considered a suspect in Sumi's disappearance, but that they were sought for information as they were rumored to have been with Sumi around the last times she was seen.>>
