I am 99.9% sure I found a match for him also.

Robert Pinkerton, aged 30, went missing in Isla Vista, California. He was known to have a transient lifestyle.

He had a chipped front tooth and had a beard.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

The postmortem photo and him look exactly alike. They both have a chipped front tooth, long beards, and long hair.

Robert Pinkerton has blue eyes. This gentleman's eyes are brown. Sometimes this can be obscured by decomp, but it doesnt look like that is the case here.

IMO, the hair length and style don't match either but things change with time and eye color can change with decomp, I think he does look similar though but I'm no expert either.

Eye color can be altered with decomposition, but from what I gather, eyes tend to become cloudy and lighten after death rather than become darker. I don't think it's as common for blue eyes appear brown as it is for the reverse.

Based on the postmortem photos, the UID appears to be very freshly dead. I don't know what sort of temperature/humidity conditions were in place in October '97 in southern California, but I doubt he had been dead for more than a few hours before being found. For what it's worth, his eyes do appear to be a little bit lighter than brown, although the photo is in black and white, making the exact color a bit hard to discern.

I literally have forgotten about this case until everyone's comments. I may go ahead and contact LE JUST to be sure, but I'm not so sure it's the same guy. I'd rather contact LE than be kicking myself about it later.

Maybe ask to double-check his height too? That may give them an actual reason to respond, they often don't otherwise.

They updated Doe’s NamUs and fixed the height and weight issue. He is 5’8” and 120 pounds, so not Robert Pinkerton. They do look alike, for sure.

This case is strange, because he doesnt fit the profile of normal south to north border crossers. So potentially it was someone going from north to south. If so, Emmanuel Emond from New Brunswick Canada is a good candidate. He was thought to have travelled from Canada to Mexico when he went missing .

He actually went missing from a tiny Canada-USA border crossing, so there is every chance that he got across and subsequently died trying to cross into Mexico.
