‘Don’t call the police’: Missing 15-year-old girl may have left with adult man she met online

Polices told the newspaper that the teen girl left a note behind that read: “I’m leaving. I will come back. Don’t call the police.”
Friends of Veronica’s reportedly told police that she had met an older male online who may be an adult. Police now believe that Veronica likely left with that man, but they are not certain, and do not appear to know exactly who he is.
“We are just assuming that she left with him, but no one saw her leave with him,” Keith Astley, a detective sergeant with the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, told the newspaper.

A North Bay teenager has been missing since May 15 and her family is heartsick.

Because there is no evidence of abduction, they worry police aren't taking her case seriously.

Speaking about Veronica's disappearance for the first time on Tuesday, her parents said they are afraid she was manipulated by someone she met on social media.

“We taught her everything about the dangers of the streets and social media, meeting strangers, she knows all this," said her dad, Ruben.

Veronica, or Vero as she is known, is in 9th grade, home-schooled, happy and family-oriented, her parents say.

She has never run away before.
"Never talked about it, never threatened us with it, never," said her father.

Now, from Veronica's friends, they are learning she may have met a boyfriend on Hoop, a social app connected to Snapchat.

It's aimed at ages 12 -18, connecting young people who share pictures and information.

Hoop is often referred to as "Tinder for teenagers" because it operates similarly to the dating app.

Police say they are following tips, even out of state leads, but say they’ve got different descriptions of the subject, different descriptions of a vehicle.

In addition, investigators have talked to Veronica's friends, and will talk to them again, to try to glean more information.

Veronica did leave a cryptic note.

"It said, 'I'm leaving, I will be back, don't call the police, I have a surprise and give my money to my sisters’,'" said Astley, "and then she's gone."

The teenager took her baby blanket, some family photos, and her cell phone plus the charger.

But there has been no activity on her phone.
Tuesday evening, a few dozen family member fanned-out in the area where the phone last pinged.
•That happened at 3 am Friday, in an area behind the Walmart store in Rohnert Park.
•They have searched the vicinity repeatedly and knocked at dozens of houses on nearby Labath and Millbrae Ave., looking for security video.

When the family encountered Sgt. Astley and another officer during their search, emotions boiled over.
But Astley says the department is working hard on the case.

"If they can find her before us, great, go for it," said Astley, "but we care and we are looking for her."

There is a $10,000 reward for information bringing Prado safely home.

The family is so worried about Veronica. They have set up a "find" page on Facebook:

Veronica's aunt, or mother, "VA" has more posts about what has been done so far in the the search for Veronica. Search Facebook for "veronica prado, rohnert park police." VA is listed below the photo on a post to "Redding Crime and Community Alert."

Hoping the 10K reward moves somebody to speak up.

15 years old. Beautiful, family oriented girl. Her poor family. Unimaginable.

Hoop? Who knew. These kids are so electronically sophisticated yet so vulnerable. Please be O.K. Veronica, and come home. The fact she took family photos and her old blanket? Speaks volumes. As if the young lady is expecting to set up house.

Rohnert Park and Salinas police, as well as FBI agents, received a tip and located the girl unharmed in a Salinas apartment around 8 p.m., officials said.
Gonzalez-Martinez met the girl online and became her “secret boyfriend,” Rohnert Park police said. Some of the girl’s friends said the teen had started seeing a male who was “older,” and she left with him voluntarily on May 14.
