This article posted May 27 2025 and updated 23 hours ago has an undated correction that says:
An earlier version of this online article mistakenly reported that the remains of two people were located inside of the vehicle. In reality, the Butte County Sheriff's Office never specified whether the remains belonged to one or more people. They also never specified whether the remains were inside or nearby the vehicle.
This article, also posted May 27 2025 says
A car belonging to two women who went missing from Chico in July 2024 has been discovered with two bodies inside, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office (BCSO)
and then there is a follow-up article from yesterday that says
In December 2025, the Shasta County Coroner’s Office confirmed that one set of remains belonged to Sakamoto.
Testing with Chico State Anthropology is still happening to positively identify the second body.

It seems there is incorrect information that just kept being perpetuated. I couldn't find anything from Butte County Sheriff's Office since 2024, but Shasta County Sheriff's Office confirms multiple sets of remains found "nearby" the vehicle, not inside, and that only one set has been identified, but does not specify how many other sets there may be.

No mention anywhere of if the disappearances (and now death(s)) are still considered not suspicious.
