Tuesday, March 17th:
*Pretrial Conference Hearing (new case #) (@ 8:30am PT) – CA – William Tillett (11) (May 24, 1990, Inglewood, kidnapped & murdered) - *Edward Donell Thomas (22 @ time of crime/50/now 51) arrested (2/14/19), charged (2/20/19) & arraigned (10/7/19) with 1 count of murder during commission of a kidnapping & lying in wait & 1 count of a felon in possession of a firearm. Plead not guilty. Held without bond.

2/20/19 Update: Did not enter plea. Arraignment hearing is reset for 4/4. 4/4/19: Plead not guilty. Next probable cause hearing (to see if enough evidence to go to trial) on 5/1. 5/1/19: Probable cause found to bind over for trial. Next Preliminary hearing on 6/3. 6/3/19: Hearing reset for 6/20. 6/20/19: Next preliminary hearing on 7/2. Moved to 7/3.
7/5/19 Update: New case #XCNBA475163-01 (same charges) arraignment hearing scheduled for 7/17. No further dates on case # LACBA475163-01- last hearing 7/3, case is closed & new case #. 7/17/19: Arraignment moved and will be an arraignment & plea hearing on 8/7. 8/7/19: Hearing rescheduled for 9/10. 9/10/19: Arraignment & plea hearings rescheduled for 10/7. 10/7/19: Plead not guilty. Next pretrial / trial setting hearing on 11/6.
11/6/19 Update: Next pretrial conference hearing on 1/7/20. 1/7/20: Next pretrial conference hearing on 3/17.

DA Gascon's office seeks to dismiss special allegations in cold case murder of Inglewood boy, prompting backlash

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- A recent prosecutorial decision in a murder case dating back 30 years had prompted backlash for Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon and his newly implemented directives.

William Tillett, 11, was killed in May 1990 while walking home from elementary school in Inglewood. Edward Donell Thomas has been charged with the boy's murder.

At a pre-trial hearing on Tuesday, those representing the child's family objected to the prosecution's motion to dismiss the special allegations in the case. The special allegations include lying in wait and kidnapping in commission of murder.

The judge agreed to defer her ruling until March.

Sacramento County's chief prosecutor has informed Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon that her office will no longer grant him jurisdiction over any crimes that involve Sacramento County.

A spokesperson for Gascon issued the following statement to ABC7:

"The Defendant in this case is facing life in prison.

Enhancements have never been shown to enhance our safety, but excessive sentences have been shown to exacerbate recidivism and create more victims in the future.

District Attorney George Gascon is implementing policies based on data and science not fear and emotion. Data shows that these policies will reduce victimization and crime in our communities in the long term."

The union representing Los Angeles County prosecutors has filed a civil lawsuit challenging Gascon and his sweeping new directives to eliminate three-strikes allegations and some sentencing enhancements.

That case will be heard next month.
