"As the stubborn blaze entered its sixth day, it was transitioning "from a wind-driven fire to a topography-driven fire," according to the Ventura County Fire Department. Powerful Santa Ana winds and low humidity helped the fire spread quickly during its early stages.

The fire, which began Monday in Santa Paula, has destroyed 537 structures and damaged 118 others. Some 15,000 structures are threatened."

"The region’s top air-quality monitor Saturday warned residents to continue taking precautions — like avoiding rigorous outdoor activities and keeping vulnerable people indoors — due to smoke from several still smoldering wildfires across Southern California.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District said in an alert that air quality remained unhealthy in areas directly affected by smoke.

The Diamond Bar-based agency said smoke from four fires — the Creek, Rye and Skirball fires in Los Angeles County and the Liberty fire near Murrieta in Riverside County — was still affecting the region."

Friday’s fire was the third brush fire that was declared arson in two days, as firefighters worked relentlessly to combat multiple major wildfires throughout the Southland that have blackened hundreds of square miles, destroyed hundreds of homes and other structures.

Anaheim residents helped police detain a man who authorities say was spotted trying to set fires near the Anaheim Hills Festival shopping center at 6 p.m. Friday, authorities said. No active fires were reported in the area at the time.

And police in Irwindale arrested a 33-year-old Azusa man Wednesday on suspicion of arson after he was seen fleeing from the origin point of a nearly 1-acre brush fire near Lario Park in Irwindale.

Authorities ask that anyone with information on the Pasadena fire to call 626-744-4241. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

"A 5-acre brush fire ignited near homes in Monrovia late Saturday, threatening homes and prompting evacuations before being contained, officials said.

The fire was first reported shortly before 8 p.m. in the 500 block of Norumbega Drive, Monrovia police Sgt. Kevin Oberon said.

WOW. I turn my back for a minute and another fire pops up. :panic: YIKES...Glad they shut it down so quickly.:copcar:

"Evacuations were underway early Sunday as the Thomas Fire was threatening neighborhoods in the eastern Carpinteria Valley.

At the same time another outage hit the South Coast, with power out at least from Carpinteria to Goleta.

Cause of the outage was unknown, but possibly is related to the fire.

Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies were going door to door in the Shepard Mesa, Stanley Park and Gobernador Canyon neighborhoods, according to emergency radio traffic."

Gov. Jerry Brown has a sobering message for Southern Californians after a week of raging wildfires: This is your new normal.

A half dozen fires have collectively scorched more than 180,000 acres since last week and destroyed 792 structures, according to officials.

This is kind of the new normal," he said, adding that extreme fire activity will happen on a regular basis for decades.

"With climate change, some scientists are saying that Southern California is literally burning up," he said. "So we have to have the resources to combat the fires and we also have to invest in managing the vegetation and forests ... in a place that's getting hotter."


Latest developments

Setbacks: A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties until Sunday evening, the National Weather Service said. It means that critical fire weather conditions are expected due to a combination of gusty winds and low humidity.

Progress: Cal Fire director Ken Pimlott said firefighters are making a lot of progress, but there's still much to be done. "We're far from being out of the woods on any of them," he said.

Teamwork: Nearly 1,000 fire departments across California are involved in efforts to contain the blazes.

More help: The White House has approved California's request for direct federal assistance. President Donald Trump ordered FEMA and Homeland Security to coordinate relief efforts in affected counties.
