I wonder if she had Stilnox to make her sleep. We have some high profile people in Australia who have done weird things after taking Stilnox. I was offered it when I was in hospital but I declined and had Temazepam instead. At least I know what that is.

Very sad. How in the world would someone just out of surgery find their way to the top roof of the building like that? Seems like those doors would at least be locked...

That's known as Ambien here in the US - and used more for sleep, although it's possible it was given to her after the surgery and interacted with the leftover anesthetic.

All I know is the time I had the violent rage after surgery I also was WAKING UP DURING IT at least twice and once I even said "HEY I'M AWAKE" and they kept giving me more. The whole experience was a nightmare and it was in a Navy hospital.

Sounds like anesthesia played a role. Proof that there is no such thing as a routine surgery.

I'm a substitute circulating nurse in a plastic surgery OR. We do facelifts using (primarily) propofol as general anesthesia. The patient breathes on their own, so no intubation. Recovery is much easier than with the usual big guns type general anesthesia where the patient requires mechanical ventilation. Even so, our patients stay in a hotel room (which is inside the hospital) overnight, and they are required to have a person staying with them at all times. If they have no one they want to ask, we refer to a sitting service. These people are very familiar with the plastic surgeries we do, but they are not licensed nurses by any means. Because they are on site, their proximity to the ER is very handy in the first 24 hours post op in the event there are complications.

I have never worked in any other outpatient OR setup, so I have no idea if this is typical, but just based on how this particular plastic surgery group functions, something like this would not likely ever happen.

I wonder what kind of supervision this unfortunate woman had post op.

Her family have released a statement saying they believe her fall is linked to a "postoperative neurobehavioral disturbance".

They said: “We understand that throughout the psychotic incident, the Sandra we knew and loved for her calm, positive disposition never regained consciousness. We draw some comfort from that fact.

“Sandra’s daughters feel that awareness of the risks of post-operative psychosis when planning for surgery involving full anaesthesia may help others avoid a similar tragedy.”

That was my first thought as well. If it was necessary she stay overnight, who was supposed to be observing and/or caring for her? If she was first seen around 7:00am, it would be daylight, however, I'm curious when she was actually where she was supposed to be.

Such a tragedy and hopefully, although a suicide, the cause of her death is thoroughly investigated.

Sandra had gone to Los Angeles to have a straightforward cosmetic surgery operation in a renowned Beverly Hills clinic. The operation lasted 13 hours, after which she was removed to a recovery room under 24-hour nursing supervision.

A few hours later she came round in a state of panic and paranoia, which the doctors described as post-anaesthetic psychosis. This apparently happens in around 2 per cent of such procedures. She overpowered the nurse, stripped off her clothes and ran towards the first exit.

One associate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed Dr Novack was renowned for his imperious bedside manner, and for being one of the most expensive surgeons in Beverly Hills.

“A facelift with Novack can cost up to $150,000 – with other surgeons, $25,000 is the ball park figure,” the source told The Telegraph. “He isn’t one to hold clients’ hands. Some people like his confidence, but he isn’t warm and fuzzy. He is not for everyone, even if they can afford him”.

I can attest to having an "emotional breakdown" immediately after being woken up from surgery. My Dr. cut the joint out of my big toe & I woke up and was hysterical & crying. Took about an hour to come back to reality. No chance to run away - foot heavily bandaged. I can still "feel the breakdown" & hopelessness if I relive the awakening - which isn't often.

Do you think she wanted to jump off because of a failed surgery of her face? It's just quite possible, since many people sue surgeons who spoil the face of girls. So it is possible that it immediately had a tantrum, and she couldn't control herself, so she ran to the roof. I just don't understand why she was naked. <modsnip>

the article states she ripped off her clothing before running up to the roof
