A 22-year-old man was charged Wednesday with torturing and killing his mother (Yi Tung Weng), who was visiting Los Angeles from Taiwan. Chen Chao Ming faces one count of capital murder with the allegation that the killing involved torture as well as one count of animal cruelty, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office...

Ming tortured and hit his 46-year-old mother with a hammer before strangling her to death, detectives said. She died of asphyxiation. At some point, prosecutors say, Ming tossed his cat out the window. The scene in the downtown apartment left investigators "traumatized," Los Angeles Police Department Officer Jack Richter said.

A 22-year-old man who allegedly tortured and strangled his mother at his downtown Los Angeles apartment while she was visiting from Taiwan pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a capital murder charge...

The murder charge includes the special circumstance allegation of murder involving the infliction of torture, along with allegations that he used a hammer and a three-inch nail in the commission of the crime.

On 24 August 2017 Chao Ming Chen had pleaded no contest to first-degree murder of his mother Yi Tung Weng. He was deemed to be insane at the time of the crime, and subsequently found him not guilty by reason of insanity, and he remains in a secure facility.
