Pricey helicopter rides are the only option for stranded residents living south of Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge to get out of Big Sur.

Stranded residents can ride helicopters from the Post Ranch Inn to Monterey Regional Airport for $780 per flight. The helicopter seats up to three people, however there is no separate baggage compartment, so bag space is limited.

The reason for the historic water levels was that Anderson Reservoir, the largest reservoir in Santa Clara County, filled over the weekend to the top for the first time since 2006 because of relentless storms. The water poured down the concrete spillway and into Coyote Creek, ending the dam’s ability to act as a flood control regulator.

“Up until this storm we have had room in Anderson Reservoir to capture flood waters. Now there is no more room,” Grimes said. “There’s no more space for us to capture it. A lot of rain has fallen on a very saturated watershed.”

The waters were expected to peak this evening through midnight for much of Coyote Creek, although some places that have flooded in the past, such as Alviso, were coming through without significant problems due to flood control projects in the last two decades.

luckily, my neighborhood was hit hardest in a nearby industrial area. but the creek a block from my house breeched and flooded the field. so far it ahs only flooded the street on the other side and not my hood. the field looks like a creek with rapids and everything!

driving to work this morning was a logistical nightmare. berryessa road and 101 were both closed, everyone was takingmabury which goes to 1 lane and over 101 and turns into taylor. the freeway was a graveyard, it looked eerie.
