“San Francisco, once a COVID success story, rolls back reopening efforts

Officials in San Francisco, one of the country's most successful cities at limiting spread of the coronavirus, said Tuesday they'll roll back reopening efforts amid a 250% increase in COVID-19 cases since Oct. 2.

Mayor London Breed said that, starting at the end of Friday, indoor dining at restaurants — which two weeks ago was scheduled to get expanded to 50% of capacity — would not be permitted at all. In addition, opening of high schools for in-person learning will be paused, though not for elementary and middle schools. And allowed capacity at gyms and movie theaters will be further reduced.

San Francisco's case rate has climbed in the last two weeks from 3.7 per 100,000 residents to 9. By comparison, the U.S. has recorded 33 cases per 100,000 residents in the last week. In New York, the country's densest and most populous city, the figure over the last week is 13 per 100,000.

“The fact is the virus is spreading and we have to make the hard decisions,” Breed said.“

Just a little something that was sent to me today...
Charlie Chaplin lived 88 years.
He left us 4 statements:

This link is to a Fresno State professor’s blog about the 1918 Pandemic. It is so interesting to read how people reacted to the pandemic back then. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose ;)

Sacramento church holds indoor services despite county’s ‘widespread’ COVID tier

“And on Sunday, there were plenty of people flocking to New Season church in South Sacramento – where religious services were held indoors – even though Sacramento County is now in the purple tier. That means worship services must be held outdoors only – with 100 people or 25% of capacity, whichever is less.

But those restrictions didn’t stop lead Pastor Samuel Rodriguez from allowing worship today inside his church.

Rodriguez told KCRA 3, “Churches are essential. We know how to gather. We are big boys and girls. We know how to be responsible, wearing masks, social distancing, temperature checking. If we can do it at Target, if we can do it at liquor stores, we can do it in God's house.”“

[...]

“I am bothered by our governmental authorities right now with these restrictive measures,” Rodriguez told KCRA 3. “They are not considering the vitality and the necessity of faith communities for such a time as this. So I hope they would reconsider. This to me is precarious, it's not right.”

Rodriguez said he is also considering a legal challenge against the state.“

“California sounds alarm, closes many shops
Large parts of California are closing shop.

Nearly three-quarters of the counties -- home to about 37 million people, or 94.1% of the California population -- will be required to operate under the state’s most stringent pandemic restrictions, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday. Indoor dining, gyms and movie theaters, among other businesses, must either remain closed or shut down in 41 of the state's 58 counties, beginning Tuesday.

Newsom said he is “sounding the alarm” due to “the fastest increase California has seen" since the pandemic began, with COVID-19 cases doubling in the last 10 days. Cases rose 51.3% in the first week of November. California hit 1 million coronavirus cases last week, joining Texas as the only states to reach the undesired milestone.

Under the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, which is its four-tiered, color-coded system for reopening, the state can tighten restrictions based on emergency situations.“

We are going back to curbside pick up only at my library Monday. 1/2 staff in building at a time, alternating weeks of working from home. Now until mid January.
However, this might change tomorrow if the numbers rocket up into the stratosphere over the weekend. We all might be working from home. Our Director does not want us to be essential workers. We are a special district and can make that call on our own.
We shall see what we shall see.

CA could run out of ICU beds by Christmas due to COVID-19, prompting Newsom to mull stay-at-home orders | KTLA

California could see a tripling of hospitalizations by Christmas and is considering stay-home orders for areas with the highest case rates as it tries to head off concerns that severe coronavirus cases could overwhelm intensive care beds, officials said Monday.

“The red flags are flying in terms of the trajectory in our projections of growth,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom. “If these trends continue, we’re going to have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic, action.”
...
The biggest concern is intensive care cases, which have increased 67% in the past two weeks. If that continues, it would push ICU beds to 112% of capacity by mid-December.
...
Newsom put out a new call for retired medical professionals to join the volunteer California Health Corps, and said the state may soon be using tents and other makeshift hospitals to help deal with the surge. Nearly 900 people are part of the corps, only 10 of whom are supporting skilled nursing facilities and hospitals, said Rodger Butler, a spokesman for the California Health and Human Services Agency.

'Worst day' so far: LA County reports 7,593 new COVID-19 cases, shattering daily record
...
"Today, Tuesday, December 1, 2020, is the worst day thus far of the COVID-19 pandemic in Los Angeles County," said county health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

"However, it will likely not remain the worst day of the pandemic in Los Angeles County. That will be tomorrow, and the next day and the next as cases, hospitalizations and deaths increase. Every resident and every business needs to take immediate action if we are to dampen this alarming surge. We are in the middle of an accelerating surge in a pandemic of huge magnitude."
