MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KTTV) - A California family got swept into the water, resulting in a 5-year-old girl going missing, her dad dying and her mom in the hospital.

What we know:
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a call of a family being swept into the Pacific Ocean near Garrapata State Park a little after 12:45 p.m. on Friday, November 14.

The local lifeguard pulled the 39-year-old father out of the water and began CPR. The man's daughter was also in the water, but as of Saturday morning, crews have yet to find the little girl. The man's wife, or the girl's mom, was also swept into the water with the other two family members, but was able to get back to shore with an off-duty lifeguard. The mother was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

What we don't know:
As of 4 p.m. on November 15, the whereabouts of the missing girl remains unknown.

Officials have not released the identity of the family members who got swept into the water.

It is also unknown how the family ended up getting swept into the water just off Monterey County, California.

An earlier article said the little girl was knocked into the water by a breaker 15-20 feet in height. Growing up with a summer cabin (back before it got popular and expensive) on the Oregon coast, being local, we learned VERY early to stay well away from the water during rough surf. It can catch even the watchful unaware SO quickly. What a terrible thing for this family to experience.

This is a terrible tragedy, but thankfully the little girl's body has been found.

The man killed while trying to rescue his 5-year-old daughter from strong surf at Garrapata State Beach in Big Sur Friday was identified as 39-year-old Yuji Hu of Alberta, Canada, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) announced.

The daughter was declared deceased, and her body was recovered from the beach, according to the latest update from authorities Sunday evening.

Around 1:20 p.m. Sunday, a diver located the body about 100 yards offshore and roughly half a mile north of the child’s last known location. The diver brought the child’s body to shore and notified California State Parks, the sheriff’s office said.

MCSO later confirmed the body was the missing daughter’s. According to MCSO, family members say the child was 7 years old. Initial reports said the child was 5 years old. The sheriff’s office did not release the daughter’s name.

Thank you for the update, grateful they found her body. Hopefully the Mom has support right now.

I'm glad she was recovered. The family being from Alberta, (inland Canada) they likely had no idea of the dangers of the surf under those conditions. This article about the tragic event in the New York Post has a good photo of what the surf was like (top photo with LE/first responders). My condolences to her Mom and siblings.

This is SO true. When you go on vacation, you just don't know the inherent dangers, that locals already know. The ocean can change in a heartbeat. Squall, rogue waves. Just so random.

This video shows a young womnan caught by a sneaker wave (she was uninjured but it is scary to watch). This is at Cannon Beach OR where our family had a small cabin in the 60's. The "Kings Tides" which the coast is now getting are especially dangerous. From the youtube channel of KGWNews If you search google there's tik tok video that wasn't edited that showed earlier shots of her just jogging down near the water which didn't look all that rough when the wave hits. But this one is from an approved msm source.

Juan is the one who found the little girl last week. He also found little Dane Paulsen and Whisper Owen & Sandra. This man does amazing work.
