Six people taken to hospital after ‘multiple’ people stabbed at North Vancouver library

''Multiple people were taken to hospital as police responded to a mass stabbing in North Vancouver on Saturday.

North Vancouver RCMP said that “multiple victims” were stabbed within and outside the Lynn Valley Library. One suspect was in custody, and police said the attacker appeared to be acting alone.''

“We were driving up Lynn Valley Road, and there was a woman right beside her car with a seven-year-old boy, multiple stab wounds and bleeding profusely … She said it was a random stabber who was running down the street, so we immediately turned to go look for other victims. There was another 25-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds in the face,” a witness who gave his name as Steve told Global News.

“There were at least six victims we could count within a 50-foot radius, so it was pretty traumatic. We were trying to find our daughter in the area, so it was a bit scary.”

''A woman is dead and six other people are injured after police in North Vancouver said a suspect stabbed them in and around a public library in a quiet suburb of the North Shore.''

''Ethan Pineda, who turns 18 on Sunday, said he was shaken by the incident. Pineda was working at the Booster Juice attached to the mall and library when he said he witnessed a man get stabbed outside the entrance to the shop inside the mall.''

Pineda said he yelled for help, locked the door to the shop and called 911. He said he also saw the suspect enter an accessible washroom where he said another person was stabbed.''

''Harvey said they walked over to the library and described seeing multiple people being taken out on stretchers looking like they had been severely injured.

"I hope the victims are OK," he said. "I'm very sad for this to have happened in our community."

Six people taken to hospital after 'incident' in North Vancouver | Vancouver Sun
''Sgt. Frank Jang of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed a woman died of her injuries and a male suspect in his 20s is in custody.

No other information is available about the other victims or the severity of their injuries.

Jang said the suspect has had previous interactions with police and has a criminal record. The motive for the stabbing spree is unknown.''

IHIT’s Jang said investigators are asking for any video footage taken by witnesses at the scene, and are urging those who filmed the violence and the victims not to upload anything to social media but to provide it to police instead.

Anyone with information or footage is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).''

This is so awful. and shocking. In the afternoon, with people walking around, inside and outside a library.

Thankfully Mr. Pineda called 911 as soon as he witnessed what was happening. He likely saved lives by doing that.

It's deeply saddening to hear that one person was killed. Hoping to hear that the injured recover.

I have never seen Frank Jang emotional, and strongly suspect it may be because there was 7 y.o. child with the one female victim who was entering her car.

"We have a tough job but today was especially hard. North Van was my 1st posting as a Mountie 17yrs ago. Worked as a youth officer in Lynn Valley. Times like this, Mr. Rogers would say find the helpers. That's what I'll tell my kids tonight. And there certainly were helpers today."

I imagine some, if not all, victims and witnesses and first responders will be suffering from PTSD for a long while.

Michayluk said Klausen told her daughter to run and hide. Then Klausen, a local teacher, tried to stop the attacker with her umbrella.

And that is when he started stabbing and slashing her," said Michayluk.

According to Michayluk, Klausen was taken to hospital to treat a slashed hand and a stab wound in her skull. "They said she was lucky to be alive," Michayluk said.

Klausen was discharged from the hospital Sunday, Michayluk said. She added that Klausen is resting at home with her husband and daughter, trying like other people affected by the violence to make sense of it all.

"Through all her injuries she's worrying about other families and what they're going through," Michayluk said."

Man, 28, charged with second-degree murder in North Vancouver stabbings

Excerpt:

"Members of the community came to the aid of those who were victims of the attack on Saturday, witnesses said.

Darren Hailes said he arrived in the area after finishing up a run with some friends, and someone approached him to ask if he had first aid training.

He did, so he went to help.

“We weren't immediately aware of the violence that had just taken place because the area was so calm,” Hailes recounted in an interview on Sunday.

He said people brought tea towels and other supplies, including a first aid kit, to the library.

Hailes estimates he arrived about a minute after the attacker left the lobby."
