Man, 28, charged with second-degree murder in North Vancouver stabbings

Excerpt (continued...)

"Hailes said he later talked to a man who tried to lure the attacker away from other people around the library.

“Realizing he wasn't going to be able to intervene and stop a man with a knife on his own, he immediately began to back away and to call the attacker toward him.”

The man backed through the library lobby and down the street and he was there when police arrested the suspect, Hailes said."

Wow. The way these people reacted this to situation literally thrust upon them is so admirable. Fighting off with an umbrella, rushing in with first aid, luring the perp outside - so impressive. This community is in pain, but no doubt about it, it will heal.

Here's what we know about the man charged in the fatal North Vancouver stabbing attack | Vancouver Sun
''Records show Bandaogo pleaded guilty to assault in a conjugal (domestic) violence case in Sept. 2019 in Longueuil, Quebec.

A bench warrant was issued for Bandaogo’s arrest in July 2020 for failure to appear in court.

The Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued in September.

In Oct. 2018, Bandaogo was sentenced to one month in jail for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

The same day he was sentenced to four months in jail for assault causing bodily harm and was handed a three-month term for two separate assault cases.''

''A short film that featured a young man named Yannick Bandaogo training at the Techno-Boxe boxing club in Longueuil, Quebec, was removed from YouTube late Sunday.''

What a terrible and frightening attack this was.

Off topic, but my dh and I had a very short visit to Vancouver for our first time in 2019 before the pandemic; too short a visit, but we loved it there! When you can picture a location you know and love, I think it makes it that much more sad when something of this magnitude happens.

I wonder why his charge is second-degree murder instead of first-degree?

North Vancouver stabbing attack: Suspect’s friend says she’s shocked | Vancouver Sun

  1. ''Bandaogo used to train at Techno-Boxe boxing club in Longueuil, where Sandra Babou first met him in 2014. Babou, then-executive assistant in the boxing club, told Postmedia on Monday that she was “stunned and sad” to hear of his arrest.

“I never thought that Yannick could have been accused of such a situation,” she said in French. “He was a boy who has always been kind and respectful to me and grateful for the help that we could give him.”
She said Bandaogo had some conflict with his father, who had “forced him to leave the family cocoon and fend for himself.””I tried to help him as best I could with some food and show him that everything can be worked out,” she said. “He was a boy who was sad and tried to get by as best he could. We worked together until the end of September 2017 when I left my job for another. We kept in touch occasionally once or twice a year. But nothing since last year.”

  2. Attacker had no links to North Vancouver or address before stabbing attack on Saturday - Vancouver Is Awesome
''Of the seven victims, six are women. They range in age from 22 to 78. Bandaogo did have a history of violence, Tansey said, referencing the warrants and his criminal record in Quebec. The victim who died was in her late 20s.

One thing investigators are ready to rule out, Tansey, said was radicalization.''

“That is not what we're looking at right here. There's no nexus for us in this investigation to believe that there's anything in relation to radicalization,” she said.''

I love how so many individuals stepped in to help the victims.
Witnesses offer tell stories of help and heroism following stabbing attack in North Vancouver's Lynn Valley - North Shore News

(Contrast the above with the instance of this poor woman who was kicked to the ground and stomped on three times while hotel workers just looked on, even closing the open door with the woman still lying outside on the sidewalk.) Asian Woman Brutally Beaten in NYC; Man Unconscious After Subway Attack

I hope I will be brave enough to react like those who gave assistance in the Vancouver library stabbings, if ever in a situation where I can be of help. I often think about that. Being a person who has a lot of fears—would I be able to step up and help? I hope so, but I wonder...

As a Manhattanite myself, that is heartbreaking to see and it is not acceptable, as evidenced by a statement in the link you provided, bbm:

"According to real estate website Street Easy, Brodsky Organization is the property developer and manager of the building where the incident took place.

On Brodsky's Instagram account, the group said they were aware of the incident and the staff who witnessed the account were suspended pending an investigation. The organization also said they were working to identify a third-party delivery vendor who was also present during the assault."

I think they will investigate and upgrade charges if they find evidence of pre-planning.

Of course, carrying a knife around would be considered pre-planning by most Vancouverites.

Indeed, and it's clear to me that there was a plan. Maybe not that great of a plan.

Especially since he was an abled-bodied person with moderate boxing training.

Plus, a library, except for his presence is not a threatening location that a knife is needed for anything.

''NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. - The man who stabbed a woman to death and injured several other victims outside a library in North Vancouver, B.C., two years ago has “limited memory” of the attack and cannot offer a motive, his lawyer said Thursday.

Defence lawyer Georges Rivard told a B.C. Supreme Court sentencing hearing that Yannick Bandaogo accepts responsibility and “the intention was there” during the attack, but the 30-year-old cannot explain what led to it — despite a desire for answers among victims and their families.

Bandaogo, 30, pleaded guilty to murder, several charges of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault over the March 2021 mass stabbing.

At Thursday’s hearing, Crown and defence lawyers jointly proposed that Bandaogo receive a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years, although Justice Geoffrey R.J. Gaul may still decide on a different term.''

''Crown attorney Daniel Loucks told Thursday’s hearing in New Westminster that Bandaogo had a criminal record for threatening to stab two strangers in Winnipeg in 2020, as well as assault charges in Quebec.''
