What I learned from this case today.

It seems that if someone has an attorney to attend the police station, when turning themselves in, part of the 'deal' one can make via the attorney, is that the police DO NOT release your name/address until it comes to court.

I did not know people can 'make deals' with the police, thought that (making a deal) happened at the court level.

As per Steve Ryan, CP24

well, whatever 'deal' he made didn't work since his name was released

^^^ yes, in court. As per the deal.

Raptors tickets being auctioned off in support of hit-and-run victim's family
"The company that owns the Toronto Raptors is auctioning off a pair of tickets to Game 1 of the NBA Finals to support an employee whose son was the victim of a hit and run over the weekend."
"Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) confirmed Tuesday that Ruhul Chowdhury works for the company and that his son remains in critical condition at The Hospital for Sick Children.

“In addition to MLSE providing support and assistance to the family, all funds raised from the auction will be directly donated to the family to alleviate any additional financial burden so that Radiul’s family can be by his side,” the company’s website says."

Police have arrested the woman who left the scene and was a passenger on the motorbike.

Its breaking news, no idea what the charges could be yet.

I believe she is the fiancé of the driver.

Woman, 32, charged in hit-and-run that left boy critically hurt
"Shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday, the woman police allege was the passenger aboard the motorbike, identified as Breanne Lynn Maclellan of Markham, surrendered to police.

She was charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident that caused bodily harm.

Maclellan is scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Thursday morning.

Sgt. Brett Moore told CP24 that it is necessary to lay charges for instances such as this, especially when a collision involves a small child, to reinforce the idea that motorists are bound by a “social contract.”

This should be interesting.......

A passenger being charged with leaving the scene?

Any lawyers who can explain how this 'social contract' will pan out?

Leaving is morally wrong but the law and morals are often/usually two very different things.

Thanks dotr.

very interesting
I didn't think we had a good samaritan law so I'm glad to see the charge

I guess I'm not understanding what the difference is. His name wasn't kept private so what was the purpose of the 'deal'?

The police usually release the perps name after an arrest. His lawyer made a deal to keep his name 'under wraps' until the bail court date. In the court, one must identify oneself to the court, so that's when the media/public got his name. The reason is in the Toronto papers, if you google his name but I'm not comfortable posting it here.

I thought you thought he just had a lousy lawyer. LOL

His fiancé has been charged with leaving the scene as well and got bail this afternoon.

Back in court July 15th, together.

I also looked into the 'social contract' thing and Im not certain but it seems to be 'cop speak' for the duty on a constable to protect and serve, in return for our support of the police. The rulers and the ruled, was quoted a lot.

So, how that would apply to a regular citizen I do not know. Have never heard anything like it before.....

Hopeful news!
Boy, 4, struck by motorcycle now expected to make full recovery
"The family of four-year-old boy struck and severely injured by a motorcycle in May says the boy will be able to walk, run and play soccer again, but the road to recovery is still long"
"His family says he is now able to open his eyes and move his arms and legs."

“That’s why I can smile a little bit right now,” his father Ruhul told CTV News Toronto Saturday. “Because I see the improvement every day.”
