London police are searching for a suspect after a 4-year-old child was abducted by a stranger Sunday morning.

Police say the incident happened around 9:15 a.m. in the area of Barker Street and Melsandra Avenue.

The child was abducted by a male suspect driving a gold or beige-coloured older 4-door Chevrolet Impala.

More information has been released, including a description of the suspect.

The suspect is described as white, approximately 60 years old, 5’10”, average build, wearing a plaid shirt with brown framed glasses.

He has grey hair and his facial hair was described as having a bit of growth.

Investigators say the girl was playing outside with a sibling when what police describe as witnesses saw a vehicle stop in the middle of the intersection. The man got out of the car and approached the young girl, police said. Then he picked her up and put her inside his car.

Witnesses saw the car driving eastbound on Melsandra Avenue, police say, before driving through the neighbourhood and stopping back in the area where the girl was originally picked up. Witnesses lost sight of the vehicle but gave a description to police.

The young girl was dropped off near her home, then ran to tell her parents, police say. She did not sustain any physical injuries, police say.

So why did the guy turn back? Did he originally act on an impulse and then realized that witnesses saw him?

Apparently they took someone into custody yesterday, but then released him without charges last night.

They say that the man has gray hair....but why does his hair look dark in the image? Is he wearing a hat??
It was a lovely warm day on Sunday, if perhaps not super warm at 9:15 a.m. Someone wearing a hat would have looked odd. Also, if wearing a hat, how did the witnesses identify the suspect as having gray hair?

I'm confused.

Great news.

Late Monday police announced they had arrested a man and that charges are pending.

More information regarding charges and the suspect is expected to be released Tuesday.

The person arrested was 65 yo Lawrence Allen Thompson. He is charged with:
- abduction of a person under 14 years old
- kidnapping
- sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age
- sexual interference with a person under 16 years of age

He had his bail hearing put over until tomorrow.

Court records show this is not Thompson’s first brush with the law.

Thompson was charged with two counts of sexual interference, and two counts of sexual assault in January 2007. All four charges were dropped in September 2009, the same day he was issued a peace bond.
