Can't locate link for live presser, but brief from watching the presser on Global BC TV ...

Sannich Chief of Police Dean Duthie ... injured officers are 3 members of Saanich PD and 3 member of Victoria PD GVERT. Three will be released shortly and others are in surgery for more serious injuries.

Suspects believe to have been wearing body armour.

Concerns about potential explosive device in area. Potential explosive device confirmed in vehicle associated with the suspects.

Massive response is ongoing from various surrounding police departments.

Shelter in place remains in place at this time.

Saanich Police say 3 of 6 injured officers now released from hospital. Other 3 underwent surgery. 2 will require more surgery. Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crimes Unit now takes over investigation. RCMP Sgt. Manseau calls it “an attempted murder investigation.” #yyj

In today's presser RCMP Sgt Manseau (VIIMCU) said the white van at the scene had been used by the suspects, then later clarified that THAT information had yet to be confirmed. (IMO, being cautious until final test results are in, OR not wanting to totally tip their hand on what info they know for a fact.) FWIW, the licence plate of that van is clearly visible in some images. It is a BC plate and I believe it is a commercial vehicle plate (mind you, probably a stolen plate). Hopefully they will find surveillance video on that Transit 250 van and be able to follow it back to a source.

The tip regarding a possible 3rd suspect had been "vague" and after assessment of whatever that info was, the decision has been made to lift the shelter in place order. (I did later hear a TV reporter refer to a small area still being under the order, but it was not addressed it the presser and I haven't found it anywhere else.)

Here's one account by a civilian, Ms Fryer, who was in the bank when the robbery started.

There were 22 people in the bank at the time.

I saw another witness yesterday who also described hearing an explosion before the gunfire. I'm thinking the "explosion" was the perps blowing the safe. The combination of explosives, 2 suspects wearing what appeared to be body armour, the calm demeanour, the type of weaponry involved, I suspect there may be organized crime involvement. Could be wrong, but although it was an ultimate failure for the perps, there seemed to be quite a bit of pre-planning and organization.

The lady said they asked for the vault key and the manager just gave it. She also was able to call the police while the robbery took place. They were there for over an hour? IMO this doesn't seem professional at all.

''Explosive devices detonated at landfill; one officer in ICU after Saanich bank shootout

The RCMP bomb disposal unit removed “extremely dangerous” explosives from a suspect vehicle at the scene of an armed bank robbery and shootout, transported them to Hartland landfill and destroyed them early Wednesday afternoon, police say.
Louise Dickson about an hour ago'' rbbm.

“I can say how moved I am by the bravery demonstrated by these officers. These officers were patrol, front-line officers and emergency response team officers. They ran towards live and active gunfire while a human instinct would be to run away from imminent danger. Our motto is ‘Keep Saanich Safe’ and that is exactly what these officers did.”

Duthie said he has received an outpouring of support from police agencies throughout B.C. and across Canada.

“The support, encouragement and camaraderie is alive and well and it serves our members well and keeps them motivated and inspired,” he said.''

''RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Manseau asked members of the public to submit tips related to the investigation to the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit information line at 250-380-6211. Anyone with digital evidence related to the incident, in the form of video or photographs, is asked to upload the information through an online site.''

My initial impression was that the white van had been there waiting unattended since the robbery started and while the 2 robbers were in the bank.

This video has given me a new take on how things unfolded, and IMO I can certainly see why there is/was (?) a 3rd suspect (unless one of the 2 robbers inside the bank had actually left the bank to bring the van to the front of the bank). IMO this video precedes the initial one we saw of the officers rushing to the scene.

This video shows 5 officers reconnoitering at the corner of the bank while the K9 lies quietly. Presumably this is initial responders preparing to go around the corner to commence dealing with the robbery. While they prepare at timestamp 0.03, the white van arrives, slows then speeds up, and you can see those officers and canine go on alert and then rush around the corner and then a 6th human officer arrives.

''Saanich police will hold another update on a deadly shooting that took place on Tuesday afternoon, leaving two suspects dead and six officers with gunshot wounds.
The update will be livestreamed here and on CTV News Vancouver Island at 3:30 p.m. PDT.
On Wednesday, Saanich Police Chief Const. Dean Duthie said three of the injured officers had been released from hospital, while three more remained in hospital – including one officer who was still receiving intensive care.
An area around the crime scene, which was evacuated Tuesday, remained closed to residents and businesses on Wednesday. Police have not yet said if the area has reopened to residents.''

The white van is the police vehicle, not the suspects and had the GVERT team inside. All the officers shot were from the GVERT team so the thought is the suspects opened fire as soon as the van approached and they were shot inside the van.

They were from Duncan, a small town an hour or so north of the bank they robbed.

Kind of reminds me of the teens from Port Alberni that went on a rampage a couple years ago. But they only had shotguns. Where'd these guys get their guns, not to mention bombs.

Thank goodness they decided to rob a bank, which meant they had to play nice until they got the money...

"The Auchterlonie brothers, both 22, were from Duncan, B.C., on central Vancouver Island. According to RCMP, neither of the brothers had criminal records; they were not previously known to police.

"There are still many questions and investigation efforts that need to take place in order to fully understand what took place and why," said Cpl. Alex Bérubé at a Saturday news conference.

"The motive behind the armed robbery and subsequent exchange of gunfire with police has not yet been determined."

''An Instagram account belonging to one of the two gunmen killed in a shootout at a bank in Saanich, B.C., this week paints a picture of a young man who believed gun ownership was a necessary response to government "tyranny."

CTV News Vancouver Island has confirmed that the now-deleted account @isaacauchterlonie867 belonged to Isaac Auchterlonie, one of the two 22-year-old gunmen killed by police Tuesday.''

''Before the Instagram account was taken down, the bio read: "Canadian. Patriot. WW2 Pacific war enthusiast. Nature. Firearms."

''In one post that seems particularly troubling in retrospect, Auchterlonie shared clips from a documentary about the 1997 North Hollywood shootout, in which two heavily armed people robbed a bank and injured more than a dozen people during a 44-minute standoff with police.''

"When they try to give vaccine and they also try and take guns," the post read, followed by the hashtags #tryandtakeit and #getwhatyoudeserve, as well as one directing profanity at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.''

Waiting for the bios. Did they, too, live with their parents, having no friends, never travelled off Vancouver Island on their own, spent their lives playing video games and in online forums, unable to hold down a job even at Walmart...?

Apparently they did have some friends according to this article, at least during high school. It also quotes one of those friends as saying they are not actually "twins" but triplets and have a sister.

"The RCMP described them as twins in a news conference. But Mr. Henry and several other young men and women who spoke to The Globe and Mail said they were in fact triplets, and are survived by their sister xxxxxxx."
