There are two CLs, one is a nephew and one is his brother. The one that stopped by is the brother.

Drat can't find a brother. I had a family tree going at one stage and can't find that either. Can you help PrincessButtercup? Not now if you're busy - just whenever.

I have found that the best way to keep my cool here is to respond to posts only, and not address other posters directly.
There will always be those that try to disprove every single thing we offer, and those we think are arrogant and know_everything_, just like 'real life'. It's human nature, and I would say WS and sites like it are a magnet for big personalities
and experts at everything.
That's also what makes it so good!

This family is soooooooooooo confusing .... we need a family tree with real names, lol ... so many initials!

It is a big family. They are the large Liknes clan of Consort, Alberta.

Alvin is the son of Hazel and Andrew. I believe Alvin has 10 (might be 8 as either Selmer and Geri might be married and Arnold and Margaret might be married) brothers and sisters (Elaine, Selmer, Geri, Arnold, Margaret, Nora, Clifford, Allen, Dinah and Colleen.) Alvin and his siblings have approximately 30 children and upwards of 40 grand children.

I searched condos in mazatlan particularly the paradise bay condos. I know the pictures KL posted are FL and AL's condo but there is one of those units advertised for rent online. I noticed in the pictures of the living/ dining room that there are angels/ cherubs on a table and it reminded me of the kijiji pics of AL and KLs home. Coincidence? Could the condo they purchased be for rent until they were supposed to move there?

http://homehippo.com/m/prop/single-...-mazatlan-mazatlan/53af82426e54c952ad0028b4/#

Just a quick drive-by look in; I've got pages and pages to catch up on, but this one I can speak to.

It seems to be a common thing to rent out vacation condos when the owners aren't using them. I have a relative who bought a place elsewhere in MX a couple of years ago after years of renting various condos there. When they're not in residence they do rent it out; their condo property manager actually looks after the details for them, as he does for other owners in that building who also rent out. High season rentals can go a long way to paying the mortgage there.

(On a side note, and more for interest's sake than for any real relevance in this case, in certain areas of MX, and Mazatlan would be one, foreigners are not allowed to own property outright. They can only hold it through a bank trust. Also when "purchasing" property there you have to immediately provide the name(s) of your beneficiary (-ies) in the case of your death. If you don't put that on the paperwork immediately at the sale, the property would revert to the Mexican government upon your death. At least that's what my relative told me they were told.)

Who lives like that, thinking they might be attacked in their own home in a quiet suburban street in Calgary, that very night?

Most of us have no reason to believe we are in peril in our lifetimes. It simply says to me the L's were regular folks, the type that believes all disputes are handled in the courts, in legal offices or in the offices of bankruptcy trustees.

To people like that, in fact to most of us, the fact that the circus or the stampede is in town (crazies out and about), that 5 people were murdered at a party elsewhere in Calgary weeks previous, that they live near a mental health facility, etc. doesn't change what they plan in their day to day lives.

The fact that the grandson was allowed to sleep over just tells me they were decent, everyday people who don't associate with dangerous people. They had no reason to feel threatened.

[modsnip] AL also worked with DG on a patent of his, he knew DG's past criminal history of drug production, identity theft and theft of the semi-trailer. And really, no one knows who the investors were in any of the companies he had...oil and gas industry has some pretty big players...some of which may or not be law-abiding. I am sure they were decent people, but I don't know if I'ld call them "everyday" people...they had a lot more going on than most do. IMO In my experience, I've seen people go out of their way not to have relatives that could be connected to some "iffy" people involved in their grandchildren's lives, but there are those that allow their babies to be present in the middle of drug deals...every family has their "status quo" or "meter" of acceptability as far as how much involvement they allow with their children. It may be odd that NO slept over during this time, and it may be that it's not odd. Every family has their own way of doing things. JMO

There is nothing to indicate that AL associated with his former son-in-law FC. Family said that AL hadn't seen DG in 4 years. There is nothing to indicate that AL knew any of DG's criminal history. There is nothing to indicate that AL/KL allowed their grandchildren to somehow be affiliated with "iffy" people.

Yeah. Or maybe middle initials. Like Alvin Cecil Liknes = ACL and Kathryn Faye Liknes = KFL.

So it was his nephew that popped by that morning, that is even stranger. jmo

I didn't think it was CL that stopped by, I will look for that. But whoever it was could have made arrangements with AL that they were going to meet at the house or elsewhere, or help move furniture. When the other didn't show or answer the phone he would head over to the house because they had a time set-up.

I think it is a very good possibility that the family condo would be in the same building as the brother. It would be very convenient. I dont think the cherubs are the same as the angel statues.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/0...l-mysteriously-vanished-after-an-estate-sale/

"Cliff Liknes said he decided to pay a visit to his brother’s home in southwest Calgary on Monday morning after Alvin didn’t answer his phone"

So there is brother CL...and nephew CL..the boxer/actor. We had discussed this wayyyy back IIRC because we talked of the age difference...so that explains that...there are 2. All these names so similar and being family names shared...makes my head spin! :)

Hello :) [modsnip] (sorry but I don't have time to find the articles right now). AL's former son-in-law was a criminal before he shot AL's daughter, EL...so I'm assuming that EL and FC would have visited her stepmother and father, which could be an erroneous assumption. DG was in jail, DG was part of AL's extended family...it's pretty safe to assume that AL knew DG's past history IMO. I did not say that KL/AL allowed their grandchildren to associate with "iffy" people. I believe I said "IMO, In my experience, I've seen people go out of their way not to have relatives that could be connected to some "iffy" people involved in their grandchildren's lives, but there are those that allow their babies to be present in the middle of drug deals....every family has their "status quo" or "meter" of acceptability as far as how much involvement they allow with their children". The latter was in reference to a comment made about JO leaving NO with his grandparents. It was a neutral comment about society in general, it was not directed at KL and AL. There is also nothing indicating that they were not associated with dangerous people. They have a big family and I'm sure AL knew a LOT of people from his businesses...investors/partners/employees/suppliers/clients...chances are, some of those people aren't necessarily law-abiding. The thing about life is that you never really know anyone....and sometimes, things aren't as they seem. :) JMO

Hello :) AL (son) said he hadn't seen DG in over 4 years, but there were articles that said the last time they saw each other was at the Garland's last Thanksgiving (sorry but I don't have time to find the articles right now).

I believe if you read back, it was clarified that it was AL's son AL who saw DG last Thanksgiving ... and that AL himself had not seen DG in 4 years.

I`m sorry, are you sure they meant AL (father) had not seen him in 4 years? And if so, my mistake, but then how would anyone know that for sure? The only one that could say that for definite is AL (Sr.) and he's not here, so there's no way to confirm that. Maybe AL (father) met in private with DG? Who knows? Anything is possible.

If they had no contact for seven years, then it's hard to believe that something that long ago is the motive for the murders.

http://globalnews.ca/news/1438148/missing-family-search-of-rural-home-enters-fourth-day/

From about 1:20 to 2:15 in the video...from a phone interview the reporter/news channel had with Allen:

"He doesn't believe Douglas Garland and his father Alvin Liknes had spoken in about seven years."
"Allen last saw Douglas Garland at Thanksgiving, at his in-laws last fall..."

ETA: & me being a slowpoke...thanks otto! :)

And we suspect he saw DG again on June 29 sometime after 10 pm
