@BillGraveland
Photo is of Nathan, her mom and her one year son Max. O'Brien says she had no reason to worry about her parents mental health.

Is this an indication of where the defence will be going with this? Thinking they'll blame it on the grandparents?

JO'B is doing a fantastic job.

Yes she is! A lot of strength she has knowing that she might have been harmed with her other child as well....this is so so sad

Prayers of gratitude to law enforcement for their dedication to finding answers and putting this monster away.

IMO No. Emphatic No.

You know, I remember when Douglas Garland was first disclosed to us and we started finding out about him. There was a discussion regarding how brilliant this guy was. I also remember saying that he wasn't so smart that he didn't get caught.

Now I know he's not that smart. He's far from brilliant. He's nothing but a cold hearted sick murderer.

Just goes to show how hatred festers and turns to something like this. I can't imagine a hate so strong or deep or real that would culminate in the torture and murder of 3 people over something so petty.

Unbelievable the carnage created by this monster.

Can some one quickly refresh me by explaining why it takes so long in Canada for cases to go to trial? The Bosma case took a long time too before it was heard in court. I lived in Alberta when I was younger but can not remember how the system works ......

So glad this trial is finally underway. I attended some of the preliminary hearing and I'm not sure if I can still post anything about it online (publication ban) <modsnip>

Also, IMO, at the end of it all I predict the jury will come to a verdict very quickly. Won't be much to debate no matter what tactic the defense goes for. IMO the only thing they could go for is pleading insanity or saying he was framed lol but even now we can see that's not likely since Garland had motive. I'm really really curious to see what the defense will do here. They are up against a plethora of definitive circumstantial, DNA, and photo/video evidence. <modsnip>

That's just how long it takes for all the ducks to be put in a row. Discovery, the Prosecution building its case, defense building its case, backlogs. The US is the same - it's usually a couple years in high profile, complex murder cases.

I don't have an answer as a Canadian it takes so long but it's normal here for us. I'm sure more knowledgeable peeps here will have a better answer [emoji16]

Depends. I have followed Trials both here and the U.S. How back logged the system is. Is there more than one perp. Defense stalling. Many reasons.

He's smug and has a superiority complex. He's also pure evil.

This going to come across terribly sarcastic, but here we go......

Criminals in Canada have rights and at times those rights outweigh those of the victim (IMO). To make sure they get it all right and don't trample any of those rights it takes FOREVER. They cross all the t's and dot all the i's.

I am Canadian and find it absolutely ridiculous. It makes me crazy actually.

 • #156
That's the US too - but yeah, Canada gives FAR more priority to the rights of criminals than that of victims. This has been a battle between the Left and the Right for a long time. Harper brought in the "tough on crime" legislation and allowed for convicted criminals to serve consecutive instead of concurrent sentences. If Justin is anything like his pops, that'll be gone in short order. Hug-a-**** mentality. It's infuriating.

So was the green truck identified as suspicious the first day of the discovery of them missing and was it shown to family members right away? IIRC testimony today confirmed that the sister of DG notified her husband AL that the truck was DG's. The image was not issued to the public until a few days later. Presuming that was the first time PG (DG's sister) saw the image of the vehicle. And if the image was shown to family the first day possibly not to AL? He would have recognized the truck wouldn't he? There was a comment by him where he stated the truck was a 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 so wouldn't he have picked up on that right away?

I'm guessing the aerial footage collected on July 1, 2 would have been presented/discovered after the fact. I wonder how long after.

"Liknes knows the truck in question, and he says it just wasn’t up to any serious distance driving or off-road excursions.

“It’s a piece of crap truck,” he says:

He's clearly a sociopath IMO and intelligence is common in those types. He demonstrated that quality when he sued EI and won years ago. I think his real problem here was that surveillance cameras are everywhere. He probably didn't account for the photo of his truck to come out from the neighbor's security camera. Not everyone expects cameras in residential settings but they are everywhere these days. That is exactly what led cops right to him, quickly, with plenty of evidence to be found. If they hadn't identified his truck and found the acreage, he would have had more time for cleanup and/or to disappear. But yeah I think it's true that he is smart and maybe even resourceful, but you're right when you say he's not so smart that he didn't get caught.

But you know what else is common with his personality disordered type? Some seriously twisted arrogance, pride, and ego issues. So this would explain why he'd do something so evil and extreme over something so small. Also it gives me comfort that while he'll probably never publicly show it, his ego probably took a serious hit when he was busted. So I hope he has spent a lot of time feeling bad about the ego blow, because unfortunately that's probably the only thing that would actually make him feel bad in this scenario. Not the fact that he stole three innocent lives. Evil monster.

So they are saying he took them alive and killed them at the farm?? This is hard to wrap my head around. How did he subdue 2 adults and then take 3 severely injured people away? I don’t get the logistics of it all.

Maybe restraints or chloroform or injection?
