A year after she was first reported missing, a monument will be unveiled on the Samson Trail in honour of Amber Kirwan.

The ceremony will be held at the Samson Trail site on Oct. 9 at 10 a.m.

The Amber Kirwan Memorial ceremony took place this morning on Samson Trail where the monument stands. The monument has an iron gate with a heart in the center, a photograph of Kirwan with "Amber Kirwan Pictou County's Angel" imprinted on the photo and an engraving in the monument that says "For all the women, men and children who have lost their lives to senseless tragedy."

Before the inquiry began Monday, the Crown asked the court to ban from publication or broadcast the identification of witnesses testifying at the preliminary hearing. The Crown's request for the application came two days after the The News had published the names of people who had testified in the opening days of the inquiry.

The preliminary inquiry was scheduled to run 15 full days beginning February 11 and continuing through March, however, the Crown expects to wrap up a bit sooner as the witness list was pared down from 48 to approximately 40.

PICTOU – A Pictou County man accused of murdering and kidnapping Amber Kirwan will make his first appearance in Supreme Court next month.

He will return to Supreme Court in Pictou on March 21 to select a trial date.

Crown attorney Bill Gorman said whereas the inquiry was held over a course of 10 days, the trial could take about a month to complete.

"In terms of timeline, we are looking at January or February 2014," he said.

Taylor said he isn't ruling out asking for a change of venue or other legal applications that will ensure his client a fair trial.

"Change of venue is a possibility and so is challenge for cause," he said.

The first-degree murder trial of the man charged in Amber Kirwan’s death will go ahead in January as planned.

Crown and defence lawyers met with the judge hearing the case Tuesday in Pictou to discuss the trial of Christopher Alexander Falconer, the only person charged in the Kirwan case.

The trial begins Jan. 6, 2014, in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Pictou.

It is expected to take until Jan 31 to complete.

About 50 Crown witnesses will be called to testify.

PICTOU – An unusually large number of jury summons have gone out for an upcoming first-degree murder trial in Pictou Supreme Court.

Prothonontary Doris Scanlan said 400 Pictou County residents will be receiving jury summons this week for the upcoming trial of Christopher Alexander Falconer. Falconer is accused of kidnapping and first-degree murder of Amber Kirwan.

Jury selection will take place January 6 with potential jurors beings asked to be at the Pictou Justice Centre at 9:15 a.m.

Scanlan said usually between 250 and 275 people are pooled for jury selection for Supreme Court trials, but this time a larger number of potential jurors was required to ensure a jury could be selected.

The trial is expected to last a month.

People who have been summoned, but don’t appear for jury selection could be fined up to $1,000
