CANADA Canada - Amber Manthorne, 40, Port Alberni, BC, 6 July 2022

  • #81
Everyone on the Island knows someone who owns a boat nearby if they don't own one themselves. I'm sure that JH was no exception. There are marinas everywhere. I see 17 between Port Alberni and Ladysmith but there are certainly smaller private marinas as well. Those who are lucky enough to be on oceanfront property have their own private docks for mooring and there are anchored boats scattered everywhere. JH may have either had access to a boat or a friend with a boat. The sun rose at around 5:20am on July 8th. It wouldn't be unusual to see someone out on the water at that time. It is an island after all.

Good points! To be fair I've lived on the island (not mid/north island but south) for 25 yrs and don't know anyone with a boat! I do understand the more mid or north you go, it might be more common though and I do think a possibility with this crime.

If police had JH's call logs they could see if he called anyone (with a boat) to help. I hope police asked residences along the water if they have any cameras on their property for their property/private docks, or if marinas have cameras to check.

Might be risky to be out on the water in the middle of night with not a very big window of time? Might draw more attention then pulling off a logging road let's say?

ETA: It seems LE did ask for folks to come forward with video (pic below):
