'Everyone wants to help': Searchers look for missing Ukrainian man last seen in Winnipeg (1)

Winnipeg police are asking for help finding Anatolii Ischenko, who has been missing for almost two months.

Ischenko, 30, was reported last seen on Jan. 22 on Pembina Highway between Markham Road and Bison Drive.

Ischenko is six feet one inch tall, thin, and has brown hair and brown eyes, Winnipeg police said in a bulletin on Monday. (2)

Oksana Burchak, an organizer of the search who also knew Ishchenko, says the 30-year-old was seeking treatment for panic attacks at the Victoria Hospital on the day he was last seen but left the hospital around noon, before he could see a doctor.

"It was a very cold day. It was –30 C [but felt] like –48, and that's why we have concerns," she told CBC News. (1)

Ishchenko's phone became unresponsive about two to three hours after he left the hospital, according to Burchak. He left his belongings, identification documents and car behind. (1)

A family is looking for answers as a Ukrainian refugee who had been reported missing in January was found dead late Saturday night on a riverbank in Winnipeg’s Norwood neighbourhood. Sofia Frolova reports.

''Anatolii Ishchenko came to Canada in the summer of 2022, fleeing from the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Then, on January 22 this year, he vanished.
Oksana Burchak was coordinating the search efforts and knew Ishchenko before his disappearance. She says, just before Ishchenko went missing, he was terminated from his job.
“For him, work was one of the pillars. So that’s why it was a huge pain for him,” said Burchak.
According to Burchak, Ishchenko was seeking medical help and was admitted to Victoria Hospital on the day he went missing.
“He was having panic attacks. He needed help, and he realised he needed help,” said Burchak.''

This is so sad. I wish that the Canadian government would just give all our Ukrainian refugees citizenship. They are under unbelievable stress with their status so vulnerable to the whims of the government. Many of them have been here long enough that they'd like to buy a home, get married, raise a family, go to uni, and live a normal Canadian life. Instead, they get asked to renew their visas by making a trip to Ottawa to do so.

The government rules can be so cruel.
