Varaschin murder, Loder attack, human remains discovered
Author of serial killer book discusses these and more

Having spent three years researching and writing about Canadian murderers, author Lee Mellor has more insight than most people into the world of violence.
While Dufferin and area has several unsolved violent crimes on its books in the past couple years, Mellor is convinced it’s merely a string of isolated events.

“Serial killers are so rare, it’s not a conclusion we should lead to,” he said, referring to 2010 murder of Orangeville’s Sonia Varaschin, the near-fatal attack on Mono resident Shelley Loder that same year, as well as several discoveries of human remains — Van Sanh Tieu inside a burned down Alton building and Kera Freeland in a Caledon ditch, both last March, as well as skeletal remains found near Caledon Village just a couple weeks ago.

Turning specifically to Varaschin’s murder, the Brighton-area author feels her killer’s original intent may not have been murder. Rather, he suspects the perpetrator had a “disorganized mindset” and “lost control” of the situation

Old article, nothing new but this article says PK arrived at Ms Gleaves house just before eleven and just 30 minutes later police had arrived and hauled her car away. Now that is some fast police work.
Audrey's Camaro was hauled away the next day, Friday:

"...Audrey Gleave, 73, was found by a friend who arrived at her Indian Trail house for "a regular visit" just before 11 a.m. Thursday, ..."

:::::::::::

"About 20 officers were dispersed around Gleave's house Friday for "an extensive ground search" for evidence they hope will lead them to the killer or killers, Hrab said.

Just before 11:30 a.m., Gleave's white Camaro was hauled away by a OPP truck.

Did Audrey send her best riddle ?

"Since then, Gleave e-mailed Ferguson occasionally, she said. They were not personal messages, rather jokes, riddles, links.
The last e-mail Linda received from Gleave was Monday night. It was a link to a version of Amazing Grace"

I`m glad this neighbor was brought up again - I always thought it was off or weird that LF`s son is the first person quoted in the media (within a day or so of AG`s murder) saying AG was a recluse. AG`s `close` friends follow with the same description soon after.

I have always wondered what made him an authority or arrive at this conclusion, considering AG went out every Wednesday and Sunday, visited her vet on a regular basis and had shopping and banking to do - this is quite good imo for someone with limited mobility. AG also kept up regular contact with people via e-mail.

Other neighbors said they had not seen AG as much in recent years as before - the word recluse never came up with them.

Just wondering.

Would some kind soul please provide a link about LF's son and his using the term 'recluse'.

And - is there anything else we know about him? Schooling? Lived at home? Lived away? Was only home during school vacations?

:tyou:

The link is here somewhere, but the thread is so big now it will be difficult to find it.

I specifically searched a few months ago for the first person(s) to use the word recluse and was surprised to find it was LF's son. At the time he (30 something) and his gf lived with his parents across the street from AG. I think I posted something to the effect that I have neighbors that if something newsworthy happened at their house, I would not be able to say if they were recluse or not - I simply don't know what their social reach is.

OK, thanks Woodland.

So, let me get this right:

- this son is in his 30's?
- he lives across the street from Audrey's house?
- and his mother received the e-mail containing "Amazing Grace"?

Now - questions:

1. Does PK know this young man?

2. Did this young man take a polygraph?

3. Did his mother take a polygraph?

4. Did LE take away his mother's computer which received the song?

5. Did this young man ever do odd jobs for Audrey when PK was busy with his studies?

Many, many more questions................

If I locate that link, I'll place it here for all of us to review.

Oh wait - is this the neighbour whose dog made a fuss the night/day Audrey was murdered? If so, perhaps the dog was responding to someone coming into his own home?

Hmmmmmmmmmm.......................:moo:

ETA: I found something where this son is talking to the media:

http://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2912179

Down the street, Darryl Ferguson said he saw Gleave "three times in four years, other than waving, going by in the car."

"She's been a loner all her life," he said.

"She would e-mail my mom or call her once a year, twice a year," said Ferguson's son, Cam. "She just liked to stay, stay to herself."

And there's this, to refresh our collective memories:

http://www.thespec.com/news/crime/article/307949--police-investigating-ancaster-area-homicide

Gleave’s neighbours Linda and Daryl Ferguson described her as recluse, “almost like a hermit.”

“We knew she was lonely, but to die like this, I’m sorry she had to die alone,” Linda said.

For many years, the only way neighbours knew Gleave was through the occasional friendly wave.

But a couple of years ago, after a movie shoot on the street, Gleave asked Linda Ferguson for her e-mail and a copy of the film clip.

Since then, Gleave e-mailed Ferguson occasionally, she said. They were not personal messages, rather jokes, riddles, links.

The last e-mail Linda received from Gleave was Monday night. It was a link to a version of Amazing Grace.

Monday night is the last time police believe anyone had contact with Gleave.

I would like to know the answer to the same questions.

Interesting - I just Googled this son and his girlfriend. It appears they will be getting married in May of 2012.

Were they searching for a wedding photographer?

Sorry -- I'm not sure if this has been posted yet or if it is relevant, but another young-ish senior was murdered in her home(apartment):
http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1144246--woman-s-body-found-in-north-york-apartment?bn=1

Homicide detectives have been called in to investigate after a woman was found beaten to death in a North York apartment.

The 60-year-old woman, identified as Linda Thomas, was found Thursday afternoon in a condo on Hollywood Ave., near Yonge St. and Sheppard Ave E.

Officers were responding to a check-address call at around 1:30 p.m. after a friend told them she hadn’t been heard from in a few days.

Thomas was found suffering from severe trauma, and pronounced dead at the scene.

At a news conference Saturday, police said they couldn’t comment on the state of the residence where Thomas was found, but that the evidence suggested the attack was not random.

The woman had lived in the building for more than 10 years and was well known to neighbours.

Police said many reported that Thomas had become verbally aggressive in the building’s lobby lately, and had been seen in the early morning hours with men that did not live there.

As of Sunday, Det.-Sgt. Terry Browne said he was contacted by Thomas’ sister. There are no suspects at this time.

Anyone who has come in contact with Thomas since the beginning of March is asked to contact Sgt. Terry Browne at 416-808-7400, or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.

It seems like perhaps she was upset about something or her behaviour was changing prior to her murder.

Serial killers in Canada - Interview with Lee Mellor:

Since I'm still convinced that Shelley, Sonia and Audrey are the victimes of the same perp, I'm going to post this interview here.

*Apologies if this has already been posted here/elsewhere at WS*

http://serialkillers.briancombs.net...of-cold-north-killers-canadian-serial-murder/

How are Canadian serial killers different than ones from other countries?

LM: They aren’t really. One thing that stood out was that I couldn’t find a single Canadian serial killer who claimed to have cannibalized any of their victims. We do have two cannibal spree killers who I will be writing about in my next book Rampage: Canadian Mass Murder and Spree Killing, scheduled to be published in the spring of 2013. Though I haven’t run the statistics, it seems to me that, despite the size of both countries, Canadian serial killers tend to be less geographically transient than Americans. This is something they share with European serial killers, according to a study by Eric Hickey. There appear to be less Canadian serial murderers who exclusively target elderly victims. Finally, we only have one known Black Widow serial killer: Melissa Ann Friedrich.

Thanks NS, I remember this dialogue and I also remember asking figuratively how LF knew AG died alone.

GOOD POINT!! Is LF covering for someone? What does LF know? Were the barking dog noises coming from LF's house?

Now I'm wondering if the couple who are getting married in May might have a child already. Perhaps a teenaged son?

Just thinking out loud here!

how did Audrey have limited mobility?

twice or even thrice weekly is reclusive to other people who leave their houses daily

also, reclusive to neighbours could mean she didn't socialize with them

e-mail is a good way for those of us who are reclusive to pretend we are in contact with the real world

Audrey had problems with her legs going back to the time she took the computer course where she learned about websites and viruses - it was quite clear by her photog friend who took the course with her and posted such. Look it up if interested.

Jmo but reclusive is the opinion of others, not the person others are dissecting. Who cares how many times a week someone leaves their home. If it works for them, it works and does not need a conclusion from someone peeking from their windows.

So if neighbors say someone is reclusive, it is their opinion. Unless of course, they are qualified in some way with some sort of degree to rate and conclude these activities by monitoring and recording each and every time this dissected person leaves their driveway.

Last time I checked, this was a case of murder.
