''Anonymous letter adds heat to 1970 cold case involving baby found dead near Swift Current

RCMP investigators are looking for the owners of two vehicles of interest, both seen near Saskatchewan Landing in April 1970. One was a greenish-blue car from the late 1960s, possibly a Buick. The second was a copper-coloured truck with a chrome bumper and foot rails.''

''For 53 years, Saskatchewan RCMP has been investigating the discovery of the infant’s remains inside a brown and blue plaid canvas bag that was weighed down by rocks. The bag was left on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River flowing through Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park and found on April 23, 1970.''

For investigators, there’s urgency behind bringing this decades-old mystery to a close: the passage of time. The people who may have direct knowledge about the baby, who was no more than a month old, are likely in their 60s to 80s.

“Based on the information we have, this may be our last chance to find answers to what happened and understand what the circumstances were,” says Cpl. Tanya Gordon of the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Historical Case Unit.''

Gordon said they’re still trying to find the owners of two vehicles of interest. One is a greenish-blue or turquoise car from the late 1960s to 1970, possibly a Buick, seen in the area of the site in early April 1970. The second vehicle is a light brown or copper-coloured truck also seen in the area in early April 1970. The truck is believed to have been accessorized with a chrome bumper and foot rails and was described as a “show stopper.”

''A female of interest is associated with the car and a man with the truck, and both are believed to be known to each other.''

''She said there were no specific details regarding the baby’s clothing, but there were apparent signs of care: he was wrapped in a couple of blankets and was wearing pyjamas and a diaper.''

''A Regina Leader-Post story published April 29, 1970, said the boy was found below the bridge at Saskatchewan Landing, 30 kilometres north of Swift Current.''

''The body of the infant was found inside a brown and blue plaid canvas weekend bag, which was laying on ice on the south bank of the South Saskatchewan River, 50 kilometres north of Swift Current, according to RCMP.
RCMP said the baby, who weighed 6.5 pounds and was about two to four weeks old, had black hair and seemed well nourished, with no signs of trauma or violence. He was found on top of the ice and the bag had been weighed down by rocks.''

''The infant was discovered on April 8, 1970, and a greenish blue 1967-1969 Buick or Oldsmobile car was seen parked in the area where the infant was found, RCMP said. A light brown or copper coloured truck described as a “show stopper” was also seen in the area in early April 1970, which had a chrome bumper and foot rails.

RCMP said it’s unknown if those vehicles are associated to the investigation but the owners have never been identified or spoken to by police officers.''
