Two people who were shot at the same intersection in a northwest Toronto neighbourhood in less than a day were innocent victims who were attacked “indiscriminately,” police said Tuesday.

Investigators said that while they can’t rule out the possibility the attacks last Friday and Saturday were related to gang violence, there is no evidence the two people shot – one of them fatally – were in any way affiliated with gangs or “anything of that nature.”
The two victims also have no connection with each other or the suspect, they said.''

''On Saturday afternoon, a man was shot while walking by a bus stop at the same intersection, police said. In that case, investigators have said he was shot three times – twice in the stomach – and later died in hospital.

He has now been identified as Adu Boakye, a 39-year-old man from Ghana who police said came to Toronto last November to support his family.''

“Our investigation thus far has revealed there is no relationship between Mr. Boakye and the individual, or individuals, who shot him,” Det. Phillip Campbell told reporters. “And like the victim shot the day before, Mr. Boakye was innocently going about his business [when he was shot].”

Police said said the 16-year-old victim, who was on his way to a volleyball game at the time of the Friday shooting, remains in hospital in critcial, but stable condition with potentially life-altering injuries.

In both cases, the victims were waiting outside of a bus stop in the area when an unknown suspect approached and fired shots at them.

Investigators have said they believe the shootings are connected. A suspected stolen vehicle used by the suspect, or suspects, in both incidents was later found abandoned in Hamilton, Campbell added. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen a black Acura RDX in the area before or after the shootings to contact them.''

''Case #: 2024-363811
The Toronto Police Service is updating the public on a homicide investigation.

  • the victim was located with gunshot wounds
  • life-saving measures were performed and the man was transported to hospital
  • the man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and was pronounced deceased
The victim has been identified as Adu Boakye, 39, of Ghana. An image of the victim has been released.
Through video canvassing, a suspect has been identified. The suspect is described as male, black, 18-25 years old, with a thin build. He was wearing a black coat, a white hoodie, black pants, black shoes, a black face covering and possibly a white surgical mask. Images of the suspect have been released.

The involved suspect vehicle, a stolen black Acura RDX , was located in Hamilton. Anyone who may have seen the vehicle, or who has video or dashcam footage, is asked to contact police.''

“He was somebody who was really excited about this country,” Duodu said. “We can only fathom a wife, a mother, a father being called to be told that your son, or your husband, or your father, who came to Canada has been shot by somebody randomly. That, to me, is heartbreaking.”

''Local high school students are also sending prayers for the 16-year-old boy who suffered life-altering injuries after he was shot in the face at another nearby bus stop last Friday, with support being offered at school.''

''Officers have said while the incidents have the hallmarks of gang violence, that is not confirmed, and it’s not clear yet why the violence took place.'
''Police are still looking for the suspect, an 18 to 25-year-old man, along with more information about a stolen black Acura RDX. Officers say the suspect got out of the vehicle before firing at both victims''

How would they know the victims have no connection with the suspect, if the suspect is unknown? (As per opening post/link)
I was going to ask the same thing! If police don’t know who the suspect is, how can they determine if any relationship does or does not exist?

Toronto police say they are searching for evidence at a waterway in Stoney Creek, Ont., Friday morning in connection with two shootings that happened last week near a bus shelter in Toronto in the area of Jane Street and Driftwood Avenue. (Paul Smith/CBC)

"Toronto police searched a ravine in Stoney Creek, Ont., for more than five hours on Friday as part of an investigation into two separate shootings last week near a bus stop in North York.

Police said investigators canvassed the ravine near the Valley Park Community Centre for evidence.

Officers searched on foot with metal detectors, by drone and with a watercraft. Police declined to say what they were looking for, but a black Acura RDX believed to be involved in the weekend shootings in Toronto was found abandoned in Hamilton.

Police would not say if a gun was found.''

''Concerns about increased police presence

Officers have since ramped up their presence in the area of the incident as a result of the shootings and have set up a command post that will be in place for at least a week.

Jane and Finch Action Against Poverty, a local organization, said in a news release that it has a problem with police using the shootings to justify a greater presence in the area.''

The last line. The Police are using the shootings to justify a greater presence? Lol and wow.

Long and complicated history between communities here and policing so not unexpected.

Given the recent controversy over the police funding increase in an upcoming budget for a cash-strapped city I expect that a highly visible and aggressive investigation is also not unexpected.

These are frightening cases. Hoping for quick results.
