“Police in southeastern B.C. are looking for help to determine what happened to a 35-year-old woman found dead Thursday who had been travelling from Didsbury, Alta., to Kootenay National Park near Radium, B.C.

RCMP say the victim, Brenda Ware, was found 54 kilometres northeast of Radium, along Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park, along with her vehicle, a red 2019 Jeep Cherokee with Alberta licence plate YPC 553.

Police are calling her death suspicious but have not released any details about what happened to her.

"We're dealing with a strange set of circumstances," RCMP spokesperson Dawn Roberts said on Sunday.

Police are asking anyone who saw Ware or her vehicle from May 4 to May 6 to contact them at 1-877-987-8477......

......Ware is described as being five feet one inch, and weighing 108 pounds. She had blue eyes and brown hair.

Social media accounts associated with her name and image say she lived in Cremona, Alta., one of several small communities northwest of Calgary, and worked as a hairstylist.

Hitchhikers
Roberts said Saturday in a release that investigators want to speak with anybody who may have encountered hitchhikers in the area or who has dashcam video from Kootenay National Park between May 5 and 6.

She said on Sunday that police have not determined there is a threat to the public, but if that changes, the public will be made aware.....”

What a tragedy, Brenda was a beautiful young lady. It appears nobody was aware if she had a travel passenger and oddly, as her body was found with her vehicle on the side of the highway the motive can’t have been vehicle theft.

Just some background, immediately prior to her leaving for BC the Province of Alberta announced further Covid restrictions including hair salons to be shut down for three weeks. Brenda apparently worked a stylist and so she’d be out of work. Did she have family or friends in BC I wonder?

In the past the media has reported various indications of hostility directed toward Albertans travelling to BC including slashed tires and threatening notes left on vehicles. It seems Covid has brought out the worst in some people.

So this is a wild notion but I will admit but my first though - was Brenda an innocent target of a vigilante capable of murder simply due to her Alberta licence plate?

B.C. fears cross-border transmission as COVID rages in Alberta | Vancouver Sun
“Peter Milobar, B.C. Liberal MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson, said he and his fellow MLAs have heard from frustrated constituents who feel the province’s new travel restrictions are tougher on British Columbians than out-of-province travellers.....

.....The travel restrictions do not prohibit interprovincial travel, which means there’s no penalties for Albertans or any out-of-province travellers who come to B.C. unless they cross regional boundaries.....”

“We have a number of investigative theories . . . we haven’t eliminated the possibility of (a hitchhiker).”

Family and friends of Ware, who’d worked as a hairdresser in Sundre, raised the alarm and organized a search for her before her body was found.

They said efforts to contact her by cellphone had proved fruitless.

Ware is described as five feet one inch tall and 108 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call RCMP at 1-877-987-8477.''

From the initial link, I’ve no idea what “a strange set of circumstances” might be referring to beyond a female found deceased on a highway in or near her vehicle.

“Police are calling her death suspicious but have not released any details about what happened to her.

"We're dealing with a strange set of circumstances," RCMP spokesperson Dawn Roberts said on Sunday.”

Cannot help but wonder if there is a slim possibility that the ''strange set of circumstances'' might have anything to do with this event..
speculation, imo.

I don’t know, just can’t think of any similarities between a brazen shooting at Vancouver International Airport considering it’s heavy security and suspected foul play on a non or hardly populated mountainous highway best known for bear and mountain goat sightings. The two locations are on the opposite sides of the province, about 9 hours apart.

No real surprise, the shooting at Vancouver Airport involved a suspected gang war. JMO but I doubt that has any connection to someone such as Brenda who lived and worked as a hair stylist in small-town Alberta.

Man killed outside Vancouver airport is region’s 10th shooting in only 3 weeks
“His death is believed to be linked to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict, homicide investigators said Sunday.”

Agree that it is not a likely scenario, but thought maybe Brenda picked up a hitch hiker, or was car-jacked by one of the shooting suspects ( the car they escaped in, was found ablaze.)

One unusual circumstance may’ve been that Brenda’s planned destination was directly west via the Transcanada Highway through Golden. But the Kicking Horse Canyon portion is currently closed due to an extensive upgrade project so she would’ve been forced to detour via hwy 93, quite a longer looped route.

Extended spring closure on Highway 1 for Kicking Horse Canyon construction | BC Gov News
“From April 12 to May 14, through traffic on Highway 1 from Golden to Castle Junction will be routed via highways 93 and 95.

This will add up to 1.5 hours of travel time. Roadside signage will provide advance notification of the closure and alternative routes will also have signage....”

The airport shooting occurred on May 9th and Brenda’s body was found on May 6th.

I’m unable to notice any other violent crimes in BC occurring in the preceding days that stand out as a possible connection at all.

“The B.C. RCMP has identified a person of interest in the suspicious death investigation of 35-year-old Brenda Ware.

Philip Toner, 41, is described by police as white, with brown hair and brown facial hair, although RCMP said he is presently described as being bald. He is 5 feet 11 inches and 190 pounds.

His current whereabouts are unknown, but police say he has ties to B.C. and Alberta.

"Brenda Ware and Toner were known to each other, however the nature of that relationship will not be released at this time," RCMP Supt. Sanjaya Wijayakoon said in a statement......

.....”If Philip hears, or sees this call for information, we ask him to contact the police of jurisdiction," Wijayakoon said.

Police are advising anyone who comes across Toner not to approach him, but to call 9-1-1 immediately...”

''Toner, 41, was remanded back to Alberta after an appearance in court in Kelowna, B.C., on Wednesday morning. Prosecutors had applied to have Toner sent to Alberta as investigators allege Ware was killed in that province.

Toner was arrested Tuesday after being identified as a person of interest in Ware's death. Police have said Toner and Ware were known to each other, but have not released information about the nature of their relationship.''

''Ware lived on a farm near Cremona, Alta. and worked as a hair stylist in nearby Sundre. RCMP initially said she had been travelling from Didsbury, a small town north of Calgary, through Kootenay National Park. ''

Wow, that police suspect she was killed in Alberta and then transported? The driving time from Cremona to Radium is almost 3 hours.

It appears the autopsy hasn’t yet been concluded as this case is still considered a Suspicious Death. But if Toner is the murderer, I’m impressed how quickly the RCMP were on to him, even before she was deemed to be a Missing Person. They must’ve discovered something very incriminating at the onset.

In Alberta a person can only be detained max 24 hours prior to charges being laid. So there’s a strong likelihood he’ll face charges tomorrow.

If the accused drove the deceased victim in her vehicle to the location where her body and the vehicle was found, I wonder was that why initial reports asked to speak to anyone encountering hitchhikers?

“A man has been charged with murder in relation to the death of an Alberta woman whose body was found along a remote B.C. highway in a national park last Thursday.

Philip Toner faces a charge of second-degree murder, RCMP announced Wednesday, after the body of Brenda Ware, 35, was found along Highway 93 northeast of Radium, B.C.....”

This is quite a lengthy media report, posting a few snippets. So terribly tragic that Brenda somehow got mixed up with this monster who’d completed his prison sentence just weeks prior. I doubt she knew the extent of his prior high risk history. I feel for her family, what a devastating loss.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/brenda-ware-philip-toner-murder-prison-parole-1.6039930

“Less than six weeks after Philip Toner finished serving a five-year sentence for raping a 15-year-old girl, he has been charged with killing his girlfriend, Brenda Ware, and dumping her body along the highway just across the Alberta border on the B.C. side.

CBC News has obtained parole documents showing the Parole Board of Canada (PBC) was gravely concerned about the risk Toner posed to women given his long criminal history of violence against girlfriends.

Two separate assessments of Toner while he was in prison found that, not only was he a moderate risk to commit violence against a spouse, he was also a moderate to high risk to reoffend sexually.

Last December was the third and final time Toner's parole was revoked because of criminal behaviour while on release before his sentence expired on March 29.

After that date, the PBC had no control over Toner or the conditions imposed on him….

…….Brenda's parents say they knew something was wrong on May 5 when they got a call that their reliable daughter hadn't shown up to work.

Brenda lived just outside Cremona, on the family acreage, in the farmhouse where her mother was raised.

All the way home, Karla checked the ditches for her daughter's Jeep. But when she arrived home, the situation was much worse than she'd imagined.

Brenda's front door was wide open, her house was on fire and she was missing…….

……Brenda's body was found in B.C. northeast of Radium, the day after she went missing.

Police allege Toner left both the victim and her SUV along the side of the highway before hitchhiking to the Okanagan area, where he was arrested days later…..

…….Toner was sentenced to five years in prison for the sexual assault (of the 15 year old) and other offences. During his time in prison, Toner was found to be disruptive, disrespectful, verbally abusive and violent, according to the PBC decision.

He was kicked out of a sex offender program, attempted to headbutt staff and got in fights with other inmates.

Toner's potential for successful reintegration into the community was assessed as low……

…….Brenda's parents had never heard of Toner until he became a person of interest and then a suspect in her murder.

Don and Karla call Brenda their angel; a daughter and friend who hoped to find a life partner.

"I think she was looking for a man like her grandfather or her dad and just couldn't find him," said Karla.

Taylor says Brenda mentioned Toner only once in passing, about a month before her death.

But in recent weeks, Taylor says Brenda had told a couple of hairdressing clients she wanted to break up with her boyfriend but was afraid for her safety.

Brenda, says Taylor, was "trusting and so innocent."…”
