Canada - Canadian hockey team fatal bus accident tragedy, 6 April 2018

  • #121
This is such a huge tragedy. My heart is broken for all of the young men who lost their lives way too young and their coach, and for all of the families who must be in unbelievable shock and grief. They have not only lost their own beloved sons, but I am sure they have lost best friends of their sons as well.:( I pray for those who are hospitalized and hope all will make a full recovery.

Rsbm

My heart and prayers are with all of our Canadian friends/neighbors. Your great loss is felt all over the world as millions mourn the great loss you have sustained. God bless you all.

IMO

I first heard of this tragedy last night but have simply been unable to comment today. Words just fail at times. This is one of those times.

:rose: Heartfelt thoughts and most sincere condolences to all the victims, their loved ones and friends in their grief. :rose:

Can't find the words...what oceanblueeyes and sillybilly said.

Sending love and strength to everyone who is suffering.

heartbroken :tears: :anguish:

humm from this picture it struck me (one of the kids said they had to use a crane on the bus) so maybe that is why the front of the bus is gone it was cut lifted and removed from sight?

Video in link used term :T boned so that is somewhat helpful I think

BUT when I visualize T Bone it seems the side that was impacted would be facing up - it seems for the good side of the bus to be up would imply a complete and total roll over but the upside of the lower chassis of the bus is almost pristine?

In this video it appears as if the upper part (windows) part was totally sheared off which would be congruent with a total roll over but how do you end up with a pristine lower part of the bus?

Road dry could headlights on one of them went out?????????????? There are no street lights in any pics or videos

I am nuts huh? I cant visualize WHAT happened.

They were only minutes from where they were supposed to be according to this link

It was daylight when it happened. As someone suggested yesterday the sun may have blinded the truck driver. moo

Yes I think it might have been Tarabull, which I remember thinking how smart of her/him...Hatfield had also proposed some thoughts, but that was before more info came out I think...here's Hatfield's post, CAR:

ETA / adding quote for reference:

Rumble strips...yes they are lots of places in the west but I don't see any visible on google before that stop sign unfortunately, i could be wrong, only human and all.

ETA: i do see an amber flashing light with each stop sign at hwy #35

ETA2: if the trucker was coming from the east he maybe could have had sun in his eyes around 5pm...fwiw.

Sorry I have absolutely nothing to add at this time. :(

Thanks everyone for the updates.

Hi C. Everything I've read indicates the semi was coming from the east (3 o'clock). And the bus was coming from the south (6 o'clock).

HTH's

Thank you my dear that helps !

Man

I see tire marks on the right coming in but everything is such a mess

EWNS has evaded me for life!

How do you guys think it happened?

The semi was coming from three clock (?) was the bus going or coming from noon or 6 oclcok?

Can any of you figure out anything out from the pics ?

Was bus hit on right coming from 6 o'clock to noon or was it coming from noon to 6 o'clock and hit on the left if that makes any sense

trying to get some grasp of the accident sequence - how did everything end up where it is ?

I am hung up on speed of both

I'm not sure if you will be able to see this, but it has a video, and you might be able to understand it a bit more.

I am not sure which way is which in this photo either, I thought I had it figured out, but then saw the tire tracks and I'm not sure now. I do know that the bus was travelling north, the truck is said to have been travelling West.

I really can't figure out where the bus hit the truck or the truck hit the bus, but I do know that the truck should have stopped and the bus had the right of way from everything that I have read and heard. No clue how the vehicles ended up where they are pictured in those photo's.

As for speed, my guess would be that the bus was going at least 100 km/h (I'm not sure what the speed limit is there, but 100 would be my guess). It's not unheard of to be going 110km/h in 100 zones though in the prairies (or more) 100 - 110 km/h is 62-68 mph. If the truck was going full speed on the highway and didn't see the bus or the stop sign at all, the speed would be similar. I will have a look around on twitter and local news sites and see if I can find something that shows the directions better.

I am from the province that this happened in, I have lived here my whole life. We are a hockey family, as a kid, we travelled on these buses all the time for hockey tournaments. I have family that has and still does play in the western hockey league and in the minor leagues and have travelled on these buses too many times to count. This tragedy is gutting, I have been in tears since Friday night. Hockey is such a huge part of our communities, and Humboldt is small city, I don't know how they go forward from here, so very sad.

Could it be that the truck pulled out in front of the bus? There is a group of trees obscuring the view of traffic travelling north. The front end of the bus is destroyed, impact severe enough to overturn a trailer.

I come from Bobby Orr's hometown. Hockey is life. This type of tragedy has widespread and lasting effects.

Excellent observation LOVE....you know!!!

Sadly, there are plenty of intersections just like it, in remote places and small towns all over North America ~ NOT just here in rural SK. And, if you aren't a local to whatever area, you haven't a clue.

Accidents just waiting to happen.

WARNING: IF you haven't cried yet this will do it :moo:

EDMONTON — In a hockey world that overworks the “us against the world” cliché, the bus is that place where it is only “us.”

No “world” ever climbs up those three steps and makes the left turn down the aisle.

It is the safest place in our sport, the place where hockey people get to know each other more deeply even than in the dressing room, because there is so much more time. There is no need to make a long story short on the bus, especially in Saskatchewan where the destination might be five, six, or seven hours away.

“The locker room and the bus trips,” said Saskatchewan native Derek Dorsett. “That’s where you create bonds with your best friends. The guys you play to win for.”

“Everyone in hockey,” added McDavid. “Everyone has been on that bus before.”

I just asked my husband and yep, he agrees. He said he saw some better pictures, but no clue where to find them.

It was daylight when it happened. As someone suggested yesterday the sun may have blinded the truck driver. moo

We happened to be on the highway around that same time on Friday (we live a few hours south of there though), I can tell you, driving West into that sun, especially when the fields are covered in snow, it can be blinding. I wonder if the bus being white, made it harder for the truck driver to see.

Trying to take some comfort in knowing they likely died instantly, and were all likely very happy before they died.

As for the young man with the broken back who last couldn't feel his lower extremities, hoping for the best for him and sending him (and everyone recovering) healing thoughts.

Hi tarabull :) Nice to see another Saskatchewanian here :heartbeat:

“"The worst nightmare has happened,” said the league’s president, Bill Chow, at an emotional news conference Saturday at the complex, where the team was scheduled to return to play a home game Sunday night. Instead, the town will hold a vigil for them there, where the stairs leading into the arena were covered with flowers, teddy bears and hockey jerseys Saturday night.

The team has a storied history, having twice wonnational championships, and, as a community-owned squad, it holds a central place in this town of about 4,800 people. The players, aged 16 to 21, are mainstays at community fund-raisers, hospitals and senior citizen homes. During a big snowstorm this past winter, they all went out to shovel people’s driveways, former Mayor Malcolm Eaton said."

...We’re here to tell you: while Thunder Bay remains Canada’s best hockey town, Saskatchewan is the world’s undisputed hockey hotbed – a province that has consistently produced more NHL-ready players per capita than any other region in Canada, or on the planet.

I can only speak to our experience of the hockey community, only to illustrate a smidge of how tight they are. It is a huge commitment for players and family. Our Son played AAA travel. They are on the ice 4 times a week. Two practice. One home game and one away game. Then multiple tournaments thru the season.Players and Parents become one big Family. You "live" in arena's. You "live" in hotels. We had it down to an art that we all could enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner in a hotel common room. Everyone pitched in and brought food to share. The bonds formed are long lasting. Our Son still plays with many of his former team mates every Thursday night. They still get together and have stood in each other's weddings etc. Same for us Parents. I cant imagine what they are all going thru. Devastating.

Canada hockey team crash: 'Entire country in shock' at tragedy
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43685217

"Tom Straschnitzki said his son Ryan is in hospital in Saskatoon with a serious back injury, and told his father that he can't feel his legs.

The family flew to his bedside on Saturday to be with him.

"He keeps asking about his team and coaches. I say: I don't know son," he told the BBC from his home in Airdrie, Alberta."

"Nipawin Apostolic Church lead pastor Jordan Gadsby told the BBC he opened his church to families shortly after learning of the crash.

"The worst part of the night was sitting with and watching parents cry as they waited to find out if their son was alive or not," he said.

"It's an awful tragedy. I wish we could re-do yesterday. But we can't. We have tomorrow instead.""

"Canada has experienced similar tragedies before.

In 1986, on a frigid and blustery late December day, a bus carrying the Swift Current Broncos junior hockey team hit a patch of black ice on a Saskatchewan stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway, killing four players.

Since 1987, Western Hockey League team uniforms have been adorned with a clover patch in remembrance of the young men killed that day.

A roadside monument was erected at the crash site 30 years later."

Hockey community grieves after 15 killed in bus crash involving Canadian junior hockey team
https://www.abc15.com/news/hockey-c...s-crash-involving-canadian-junior-hockey-team

"The Broncos, like other teams in the league, attract players from different parts of Canada who stay with host families during the hockey season, the team's website said. According to an online team roster, players range in age from 16 to 21 and many are from Saskatchewan, with two from Humboldt. Others hail from the province of Alberta."

Cam Talbot, a goalie for the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, tweeted: "After all the hours spent on a bus with the boys over the years this one really hits home. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and communities affected by this horrible tragedy. #PrayersForHumboldt"

""I can't imagine being the parent or the wife or the kids at home going through something like this," Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said at a press conference. "It hurts.""

***********

"The tractor-trailer would have had to yield to a stop sign before crossing over the highway that the hockey bus was travelling on. There is a stand of trees on the southeast corner of the intersection, limiting visibility of the approach on both roads.

Police said a lot of issues have to be investigated, including weather conditions at the time and any mechanical issues with the vehicles."
