Canada - Canadian hockey team fatal bus accident tragedy, 6 April 2018

" “At a company with a culture of safety, it’s difficult to imagine someone with that little experience getting behind the wheel of regular tractor, let alone a B-train,” said Steve Laskowski, president of the Canadian Trucking Association."

https://www.thestar.com/calgary/201...umboldt-crash-drivers-lack-of-experience.html

Oh, thats not good. Very little experience its a problem regardless of who is at fault. A good friend just retired after 30+ yrs in OTR driving. He said its very dangerous out there these days with inexperienced drivers, many who can't read or speak English. They don't understand safety or how to drive. Most good drivers are leaving as the pay keeps dropping and the truck companies push them to drive longer hours. Many companies don't pay on time and guys are out there driving with no money for food, etc.

Probably better in Canada, it's really bad in the US.

As a crowdfunding campaign for the families of the Humboldt Broncos surges past $11 million, there are concerns that some online retailers may be trying to exploit the tragedy by stamping the team’s official logo on unofficial merchandise with no plans to donate any of the funds.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is selling official Humboldt Strong T-shirts through a Regina-based retailer. Every dollar raised goes toward the SJHL Assistance Program, which is raising money to offer mental health assistance and counselling for SJHL players.

But an even wider selection of Humboldt Strong merchandise is available through online retailers. The difference: none of those sales make it clear where the money goes.

I love that the broad "community" has stepped up and raised so much money!
Having said that, I wonder if people who have lost loved ones one by one are feeling a bit disenchanted right now. Their loved one didn't die in a "group" and therefore didn't receive much attention. I'm not saying that the Humboldt tragedy isn't exactly that...a major tragedy, but I would love it if some of this "love" spilled over to help even others beyond this specific tragedy

Oh gosh, I was wasn’t finger pointing at anybody re: doxing. Apologies if someone felt singled-out

It just felt that sometimes the thread (general vibe, no particular poster) strayed into a weird zone and we all know here how the internet can work to play judge, jury and executioner in high-profile cases. I just think that until we hear that there is some kind of wrong-doing, the driver/company etc should be off-limits.
There could be all kinds of circumstances ie: brake failure, obscured signage etc that could come into play.
The police released the driver without charge and, for good reason, have not released his details... so I just think that should be respected.

My issue isn’t to convict the driver before all facts are known. Instead my issue is with authorities saying it will take them many months to determine the cause of the crash.

Hope it is ok to post this here. Here is a link to the petition to improve road safety at the accident site https://www.change.org/p/honourable...tm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=share_petition

Thank you to all of you for the support and kindness you have shown regarding this terrible tragedy. I am grateful we can come here and share our thoughts and feelings. It has been upsetting reading about the people who have tragically died. They were wonderful people and a tremendous loss. I am so sorry they are no longer with us and they never got the chance to live their lives and grow old.

Please post any information you have on how the injured are doing. I am so pleased the GoFundMe has raised so much money. I hope it is distributed as quickly as possible to the families to pay for the funerals and any costs the injured have.

I am in awe of how the hockey community and the public in Canada and around the world have rallied around the Humboldt Broncos. With the terrible cases we have here at Websleuths and the terrible conflict in the world you can sometimes wonder if there is any good left, but the tremendous response with acts of support and generosity has proved there is a lot of good in the world.

One of my friends traveled from Alberta to Saskatchewan to attend Jacob's funeral today. I cannot fathom the depth of sadness and emotions by all involved.

Why wouldn't it take months to investigate fully and compile a report? Would you expect the investigation into an air crash with many deaths and serious injuries to only take a few days or weeks?

They will do a thorough job, and that takes time.

No disrespect, but this isn’t an air crash. The cab of the truck is substantially intact, has been in police custody, and a detailed examination should already be underway. The distances of the vehicles from impact to final positions can be easily measured. The weights of the vehicles are known. The size, dispersion, and direction of the debris field of the peat moss are known with certainty. Data recorders or similar data, and cell phone records are readily available and I’m sure are already in investigators hands. Witnesses in other vehicles may have seen the accident. Some of the injured may have seen what happened. The truck driver has been interviewed. Weather conditions and sun position are known and documented. Investigators are available, well trained, and do this every day. If personnel or expertise are an issue, call in resources or experts from other provinces, or from the US. Perhaps that truck had a brake failure due to a manufacturer defect , and they need to recall and check all similar trucks- shouldn’t we expect our authorities to determine this ASAP and act ASAP to perhaps save other lives? I honestly cannot understand, given all the data that is known and readily available, how this investigation is expected to take many months to complete.

No, it's not an air crash but it's not that far off either. At least with an air crash there is almost always a debris field from one plane. Here there are two large vehicles in collision.

And in practice, most of the factors you cite as being already known in this case would also apply in an air crash. The weights and trajectories of the plane(s), the nature of the debris field, witnesses in the form of ATC, etc.

I just don't understand why it seems to be so important to have a fast result rather than a thorough one. Ironically, if the investigation were to be perceived to be hurried rather than thorough many would see that as evidence that something was being covered up by someone.

The families of the dead, and the surviving injured, deserve the best and most thorough investigation humanly possible, not something which could possibly be seen as half assed and half cocked. And if that takes a year to deliver justice then so be it.

And this isn't done yet. There are a lot of fundraising things going on everywhere. In hindsight, I wish we had donated to Stars or the fund for the first responders, but when we donated, the fund hadn't even hit 1M yet!

IMO a thorough opinion and conclusion on what happened shouldn’t have to take many months. I don’t want them to rush, I never said that. I want them to discover the cause, so that we can do everything in our power to never let it happen again. But eVeryone just seems to accept whatever the party line is that authorities say, few ever question them. Most people don’t seem to care how long it takes them, but I do. And so I hope they are working on the investigation this weekend, and on the first weekend of fishing season, and throughout the summer holidays. The families, the victims, and the survivors deserve nothing less IMO. So let’s just agree to disagree on this one, and hopefully sometime before Xmas maybe we will know what happened. Or maybe we won’t.

Saskatchewan RCMP say they are keeping an eye on social media in the aftermath of the Humboldt Broncos team bus crash, but are not aware of any threats against the driver of the semi tractor-trailer involved in the collision.

Sixteen people have died and another 13 were injured, some severely, when the Humboldt Broncos’ bus collided with the semi north of Tisdale around 5 p.m. on April 6. The truck driver was uninjured.

Social media channels have been flooded with messages of support for the victims and the city of about 5,900 people east of Saskatoon.

As donations from an online fundraising campaign for the Humboldt Broncos surpass $11 million, people are thinking about where that money will go and how it can best be used to help the families of those killed in the April 6 bus crash, as well as rebuild the lives of those who were injured.

Although staff from GoFundMe — the crowdsourcing platform hosting the campaign — have been providing advice and guidance, it's up to the Humboldt Broncos team management to distribute the donations.

SJHL Player of the Week: Humboldt Broncos (entire team)

Nice write-up, included everyone. Starts off like this:

1997 D Logan Boulet (Lethbridge AB) led his club with six assists despite not playing a single on-ice game this past week as the Broncos sparked an entire country to unify in the aftermath of the tragic accident on April 6, 2018.

News of Boulet's organ donations has also resulted in an unprecedented number of requests for donor stickers.

A touching ceremony was held at the funeral for Brody Hinz, 18, who died in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan last week.

People gathered to pay their last respects to the young man at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church on Saturday in Humboldt.

Always a happy and playful young person, Brody developed a love of sports at a very early age, including being a fan of the Humboldt Broncos,” the funeral service program pamphlet read.

HUMBOLDT, Sask.—Darcy Haugan was four years younger than his sister, but Deborah Carpenter says she always looked up to him as they were growing up.

“He was my big little brother. He was my hero,” she said from Humboldt, Sask., where his funeral service is to take place this afternoon at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

“He was just so gracious to me and kind to me and encouraging.”

Oh yes, an investigation and a crash of this magnitide, will definitely take time.
