Canada - Canadian hockey team fatal bus accident tragedy, 6 April 2018

I've been trying to follow this investigation since the accident happened and only now did I think of searching Websleuths.

It's been a month and a half and I'm appalled how long the investigation is taking, with vehicle data easily available. I've seen air crashes solved in a shorter time and serious vehicular incidents in just a few days. There is a daily meme on Facebook suggesting a coverup, which is quite plausible considering Canada's immigration policy and sensitivity about racism. I've seen more than a couple of people say the truck driver has left the country, but no links or proof. Also suggestions that the bus was speeding, but who has ever ridden on a bus that wasn't. You have to be a fast driver not to be passed by buses on the highway. The only thing established here and in the media is that the truck driver had minimal training and experience and was briefly questioned and released. Since I've only skipped over this thread, searching for 'driver', I may have missed something. Please feel free to enlighten me, especially on the truck driver's supposed location.

Update on how Ryan is doing

“It’s tough, but it’s worth it for sure,” said Straschnitzki in an interview with The Canadian Press from his hospital bed. “I’m better. Physio’s getting better. I’m feeling a lot better.”

“Everything’s healing perfectly – I’ve still got some soreness and what not.”

Keep fighting young man you are doing great!

I share your concern about the speed of the investigation. Another worry I have is that no significant improvements will happen to help prevent more tragedy at this intersection. Two fatal accidents with multiple fatalities should be enough to get something done about it ASAP.

I'm Canadian and not worried in the least about any kind of cover up at all. Fact is, people were threatening to kill the truck driver from the get go and ergo why his name wasn't released. People don't like that? Too bad, they'll just have to wait for the investigation to be done like everyone else. Here in Canada, we tend to keep the evidence as actual evidence and not media fodder until trials happen.

I agree it is ridiculous. I have said so in the past, and was loudly criticized by many on this site. Many believe that if the investigation takes “many months” its fine. There were rumours early on that the truck driver has committed suicide, the police had to dispel this rumour in humboldt. In the interim, I am not aware of anything stopping the truck driver from leaving the country. The intersection remains the same, politicians announced they are going to form a task force to “study” this and other intersections, the families wait with no explanation, and the public is left to wonder if investigators are actively working on this as quickly as possible, or instead enjoying fishing season. Almost 2 months now.

Was in Humboldt, stopped in at Spotlight Sport & Corporate. They are currently 4 weeks behind in production of "We are Humboldt Strong" t-shirts and Bronco's jersey's but orders are still coming in from all over the world.

I see a daily item on Facebook counting the days how long the "Humboldt Coverup" has continued. It's 52 today. It's interesting to read the comments each day. Almost every day I see someone suggest the truck driver and even his boss has left Canada. No proof, of course. Today someone claimed to have information from a reliable source in the RCMP that the truck driver has fled. What other reason would there be that the authorities have been so tight-lipped?

  • #572
Frankly, I am not surprised (IF) they fled...
Sadly, I expected it.
Surprised, IF TRUE, that it has been kept under wraps for this long.

anybody else find this survivors comments a bit strange?

if you watch this video and listen to his comment @0:06 "semi-truck pulled up in front of us"

i just think the wording there is very strange, maybe this wasn't an "accident" at all

Hi Jay .... it is obvious what happened in the collision (more about that in a minute) ..... but there is a reason police and investigators remain silent until an "official report" is done.

The "official report" will be used for insurance and other liability issues and there could be a huge lawsuit case involving many millions of dollars. Thus police cannot just grab a microphone and say what happened on tonight's news. They must be very precise and thus all the measurements at the scene and calculations to follow .

Simple observation and physics show the truck went west through the stop sign a significant speed because both the bus and truck ended up west of the intersection.

If the truck had simply been pulling away from the stop sign , or making a turn , the wreckage would all be on the north-south road ..... etc etc

I followed this closely in the early days but did not know this thread existed or I woild have posted all the schematics here .

best wishes

I too searched hard for forum discussions on this accident and found nothing really helpful. Then I had a brainwave and thought to check Websleuths, where I already follow several threads. To me it's still disturbing that not even an interim report has been issued to satisfy the media and general public. You quoted a video clip from an eye witness on the bus, yet I've been reading there's a gag order on witnesses. How did that get out? Then there's the rumours of the truck driver, even his boss, leaving the country. Surely the authorities could issue a press release denying that, unless, of course, it's true, in which case there's egg on their face and reason for a coverup.

It was will4u who posted the video (and then I quoted it) ..... it was from a news interview where the passenger said all he remembered was the truck pulling out in front of the bus. I dont think there is a gag order on the case , its just that nobody wants to proclaim what happened until it is determined by investigation.

People are also being politically correct by not mentioning that in Canada we have a splurge of "immigrant" truck drivers who mostly get licenses from their other immigrant buddies , even though they are not really qualified nor trained to drive the big rigs.

Even a properly trained truck driver or his boss would NEVER put a new rookie driver on a large double unit truck like was in the Humbolt crash .

As far as leaving the country , he is not restrained because if he was to be charged it would simply be something minor like going through a stop sign.

I hate political correctness , they are a bunch of limp noodles who couldn't drive a truck or play a hockey game , they just bleed "feel good emotions" and demand society obey them. And I refuse.

The witness on the bus did say what he saw, the truck in the path of the bus.

There was another eye witness, a woman at the scene, who would not comment "due to the ongoing investigation. Story here. She was either instructed not to say anything or just didn't want the media attention. I'm sure she has told all her friends what she saw.

Yes, they stand out by their appearance, but you can't always assume they're not capable. They probably learned in their native country driving deathtrap rigs over dangerous mountain roads.

True, unless criminal negligence can be proved. I'm still waiting for assurance from authorities that he has not left.

As you said, the physics don’t lie.

I understand them being tight-lipped. That's what they do. But it's been almost two months now. I mentioned the daily Facebook meme suggesting a coverup. I read the comments and every time I see another one about the truck driver having skipped, I ask for evidence. Today a poster replied, saying a friend who was a neighbour of the trucker saw him packing to leave. It could mean nothing, maybe he just wanted to go somewhere people don't know him. But that is why it's so suspicious after all this time that no official statement has been issued that the rumour is untrue.

JayFriend, can you please post a link to the Facebook discussion, I am having trouble location it. Thank you.

It's a daily meme suggesting a coverup counting the days since the collision. I can't locate it right now, but I'll post a link next time it comes up in my newsfeed. Each day there are comments.
