Circumstances of Disappearance
Carroll Viau was last seen at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital, walking southbound on North Algoma Street on September 20, 1985. She was spotted by her husband, but he was unable to coax her into the car.

Viau had voluntarily signed herself into the hospital on September 8, after suffering a nervous breakdown and mental confusion.

Viau later showed up at a Salvation Army facility. The hospital was notified but since she was a voluntary patient, police didn't pick her up.

Thunder Bay, Ont., missing person case remains open 32 years later

"We really don't know what happened to her," said Chris Adams, Thunder Bay police director of communications. "It remains very much a mystery."

"She was known to hang around in the north end of town," he said. "She was a patient, voluntarily, in and out of the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital (LPH). So, at the time, when she was reported missing, there was a number of extensive ground searches that were conducted in that area, especially around Boulevard Lake."

No trace of Viau was found during those searches, Adams said.

Carol was 41 years old when she was last seen alive in the vicinity of the Salvation Army on Cumberland Street in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on September 20th, 1985. She was seen there by her husband who was unable to talk her into getting into his car. Carol had checked herself in and out of in-patient treatment at Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital a few times around her disappearance due to mental and emotional breakdowns, her last stay being on September 8th. This led authorities to conduct extensive ground searches which turned up nothing. She was not known to be violent but may have been in a state of confusion when she vanished. Carol remains missing.

DOB: Unknown, circa 1944
Description: Carol was 5'4 and 165 pounds at the time of her disappearance. Her weight was known to fluctuate. She has blue-green eyes and medium-length brown hair though she would also occasionally color it. She smoked cigarettes and may also go by the surnames Adams, Hardy, or Rogalski. She was last seen wearing a short-sleeve top, a jean jacket and white slacks.
