Yes but if there are people needing lifesaving surgeries, shouldn't they be as much of a priority as covid patients? If a person is scheduled for surgery, I'm assuming it's considered worthwhile to save that person's life as well? Why not have performed these urgent surgeries and started sending covid patients out of province earlier, if they couldn't accommodate both? It doesn't 'sound' like these heart surgeries were 'elective' surgeries? Imo

triaging decisions I'm glad I don't have to make

Second shots opening up for 80+ in Ontario, as of Monday.

Second shots will go by age, 80+, then 70+ etc with everyone expected to have both shots by end of summer.

I hope this 'shortens' the 16 week wait for the majority of those who want it.

When are these politicians going to figure out that they need to follow the same rules they promote for others to follow, they need to set an example, and that they need to be 'a cut above'? People ARE watching.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh apologizes after video shows him breaking COVID-19 rules

The NDP leader isn’t the first politician to come under fire for failing to follow COVID-19 restrictions. Then-Conservative leader Andrew Scheer faced heavy criticism after a photo emerged of him unmasked at an airport. Health Minister Patty Hajdu came under similar scrutiny when she was snapped unmasked in an airport lounge.

Then-Ontario finance minister Rod Phillips was also forced to resign from cabinet after it emerged that he had taken a vacation to the Caribbean while his own government publicly pleaded with citizens to stay home. Multiple other politicians, provincial and federal alike, came under fire for similar trips.

The NDP faced its own travel-related scandal when NDP MP Niki Ashton travelled to Greece during the pandemic. She had taken the trip in order to care for an ill family member — but was still stripped of her critic role when the news of her travel was made public.

“While we are sympathetic to Ms. Ashton’s situation and understand her need to be with her family, millions of Canadians are following public health guidelines, even when it made it impossible for them to visit sick or aging relatives,” read an NDP statement, issued in early January.

“Canadians, rightfully, expect their elected representatives to lead by example. While this is no family vacation, Ms. Ashton will be removed from her shadow critic roles.”

Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday before being made aware of the footage, Singh emphasized the ongoing risks the pandemic presents.

I have to admit that I am somewhat surprised... I had thought the very elderly had already received their second shots. My reading is obviously not up to date!

But what about the reports that said expanding the interval between shots was beneficial to the vax's effectiveness?

Ontarians Can Get A Second COVID-19 Vaccine Dose A Lot Sooner Now

Now that 65% of Ontarians have received their first dose, the window between first and second doses will be reduced from 16 weeks to just four, the premier said.

The first group eligible for their second dose will be residents 80 years old and older, who can start to book their appointments as of May 31, followed by Ontarians 70 and older beginning on the week of June 14.

After the most vulnerable groups receive their second doses, appointments will become available to the rest of Ontario and will be offered on a "first-in, first-out" basis based on the date of the first shot, Ford said.

Deugirtni,

My understanding is that only the elderly who are in nursing homes have had both shots. (There are now outbreaks because some staff have not/won't have the shots.)

If they are in their own homes or with family members, none of them have second shots.

What happened to the 'narrative' about extending the length of time??

My guess is that it was simply another government narrative to fit the situation.

Lies, damned lies and statistics! Very useful as stats can be read anyway you wish.

At least, thanks to the Americans, we will have enough vaccine for Canadians.

Oh Canada!!

When can you book your second COVID-19 vaccine in Ontario?
May 28, 2021

"Anyone who received Astrazeneca from March 21 onward will become eligible on May 31 at a 12-week interval from their first dose.

Here is a list of when residents are expected to become eligible for a second dose, according to the province’s timeline released Friday:

Week of May 31: Individuals aged 80 and over will be able to book their second dose.

Week of June 14: Individuals aged 70 and over will be able to book their second dose.

Week of June 28: Individuals who received their first dose between the weeks of March 8 and April 18 will become eligible. This could include individuals with the highest-risk health conditions and special education workers.

Week of July 19: Individuals who received their first dose between the weeks of April 19 and May 9 will become eligible. This can include individuals aged 50 and up, as well as individuals with high-risk conditions.

Week of August 2: Individuals who received their first dose between the weeks of May 10 and May 30 will become eligible. This can include people who cannot work from home, as well as individuals with at-risk health conditions.

Week of August 9 to 16: Anyone between the ages of 12 and 25 will become eligible to book a second dose.

Week of August 9: Individuals who received their first dose from the week of May 31 onwards on a “first-in, first out” basis. The government says that dose intervals could be as short as 28 days."

Oh my goodness, we are going to be so busy in the next four weeks. We have been working until our feet are bleeding to get to the 65% vaccination rate in three months. Now we have to do the second doses within a month, plus the kids over twelve.

Our local district has 78% of first doses completed, and 35% of the second doses, but still, do we have the workers, volunteers, vaccines and infrastructure to get the job done in a month?

Dr. Anna Banerjee, U of T, says everyone 65+ should be having their second shots asap before we start getting sick from the India variant.

It is in Ontario and causing severe illness/death.

She thinks Doug Ford is going too slow in his opening of the second shot and putting lives at risk.

She works at the vaccination clinics and says there are far too many empty seats; that there should be NO empty seats at the vaccination clinics.

Toronto Star

ETA: The India variant B.1.617 is 50% more transmissible and cases in the UK have doubled in a week.

Scientists do not yet know if the vaccines are effective with this variant.

Lets roll up those sleeves!!

Something not being discussed yet.

Being vaccinated is totally optional and many people do not wish to participate.

I wonder, down the road, if it will remain being about personal choice.

Does it boil down to some people infecting others because they 'choose' to not be vaccinated??

Whose rights take precedence with a potentially fatal virus?

Will vaccination become part of your job requirement??

Public Health used to be about the Public. Now, it seems to be personal choice.

When I was very young, we had either measles/chicken pox and can still remember the big, red sign posted onto our front door.

My father could go to work but mother and kids had to stay indoors and groceries were dropped off by relatives. (He might have stayed at my grandmothers, dont remember)

This was not a choice but a Public Health measure, pre vaccination of measles, mumps and rubella.

If I caught diphtheria/tuberculosis, do I have the right to refuse vaccination and mingle at the grocery store??

Things that make me go hmmmm.
