Fewer than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario for second straight day

"Health officials are reporting 1,588 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, the lowest single-day case count since March 24."

"Wednesday’s new infections bring the seven-day rolling average of daily cases to 2,183, down from 2,370 a week ago."

Truer words were never spoken.

We are in for a huge shock with our 'one dose summer.....' thing.

If we dont get wiped out by the India variant or others, there is a chance that more severe variants came emerge from partially vaccinated people.

The fact that we are partially vaccinated, the virus doesnt die but grows more resistant to the vaccine.

Basic immunology but is the PM even taking advice from scientists???

Dunno.....

Good to know that Trudeau and famille have had their second shots!!

My doctor recommends that I have a second shot too, for himself also.

This is NOT a mix and match situation but what kind of science degree does the Prime Minister have?? Failed snowboarding coach/pothead. IMO MOO

Disgusting, absolutely disgusting! IMO MOO

ETA: this is not a political comment but my opinion of this gong show situation.

ca.news.yahoo

Found a video of Question Period where Trudeau states that his doctor has recommended he get a second shot of AZ when it becomes available.

Have no date for the tape, so no answer as to 'has he had his shot or not'.

Hope this helps clarify.....we're on the Gong Show.

Why many Canadians feel stuck in 'limbo' without COVID-19 vaccine 2nd-dose appointments

Given the varying approaches between provinces, the range of booking systems and vaccination sites, and shifting recommendations on who's eligible for a shot, it's not surprising some Canadians are feeling confused.

Even Tania Watts, an expert on vaccines, is stuck in the same boat, not knowing when she'll get her second dose after having a first round of AstraZeneca. Ontario's booking website told her to check with her pharmacy — but Watts's pharmacy couldn't tell her anything either.

"A lot of people are frustrated," she said.

Watts's greater concern is that if people take months to get a second shot and perhaps slip through the cracks of the system, there could be more people testing positive for the virus as time passes after their first vaccine dose. Those breakthrough COVID-19 cases are typically mild but can be more serious for anyone elderly or immunocompromised.

Canadians who received AstraZeneca should be able to choose 2nd dose, says Tam

Canada’s chief public health officer said Tuesday she expects Canadians who got the Oxford-AstraZeneca in the first round of vaccinations will be able to choose which vaccine they get for their second dose.

Dr. Theresa Tam’s comments came hours after a small Spanish study on mixing and matching vaccines reported that giving a Pfizer-BioNTech shot for the second dose after AstraZeneca is safe and produced twice as many antibodies as a second dose of AstraZeneca.
....
The decision could affect more than 2.1 million people vaccinated with AstraZeneca, and is related mainly to safety issues for that vaccine. Tam said there are now 21 confirmed cases of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia, or VITT, the rare but serious blood-clotting disorder potentially linked to AstraZeneca.

Another 13 cases are under investigation. Three women have died.

A Star article (paywalled and linked below) says Ontario is set to go with second doses of AstraZeneca, with an announcement coming shortly. Thousands of doses are set to expire May 31st.

Health Minister Elliott noted stats from UK show the AZ vax has shown much less risk of blood clots after shot#2. Ontario's chief medical officer Dr. Williams estimated the risk of stroke after shot#2 at 1 in one million, but stressed AZ recipients will likely have the choice btwn Pfizer, Moderna and AZ for their second dose. Meanwhile the province is waiting for advice from NACI on 'mixing' types between dose one and two.

Ontario's opposition leader Andrea Horwath, Health Minister Elliott, Ontario's Premier Doug Ford, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Toronto Mayor John Tory are among those who received first doses of AZ. AZ was first offered 10 weeks ago in Ontario, with its manufacturer stating the best timeframe for shot#2 is 12 weeks.

Sir John Bell, a leading physician, researcher, and Oxford University professor of medicine who oversaw the development of the AstraZeneca vaccine warns the increased variants, specifically the one first discovered in India and now taking deeper hold in Britain — makes it imperative to proceed.

“At my last look, you guys are 3.6 per cent vaccinated with two doses, so just wait for the (B.1.617 variant) to rip through the Canadian population, and then the problems you’ve had with these very rare clotting events will look pretty insignificant.”

It's rather obvious that the only way to stop variants from spreading around the planet is to stop all travel until the pandemic is under control.

Wow. From the article linked above:

Health Canada says as of May 13, 740 fully vaccinated people, and 13,461 who had received their first dose, have contracted COVID-19.

The department says the statistics come from only nine provinces, which were not identified.

There are 587 people who contracted COVID-19 more than seven days after their second dose, and 4,896 who were infected 14 days or more after their first dose. It takes about 14 days after the first dose, and seven days after the second dose for the immunity it confers to take effect.

Health Canada says 443 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, 14 days or more after they got their first dose, and 95 people in that group died of COVID-19.

As well, 32 were hospitalized at least a week after getting their second dose, and 13 people died.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) said in a tweet Wednesday that it was monitoring vaccination no-shows following claims on social media that some people are booking several times to try to stop others from getting a shot.

The agency said it shared the information with police and is making sure participating pharmacies are aware of the claims.

Here is same story at a link that is not paywalled. I wonder why AHS believes some people are booking several times to try to stop others from getting a shot??? Where are those claims coming from and why would anyone make such a claim, and how would that even stop others from getting a shot (other than there would be that many fewer appointment slots)??? It seems Alberta is doing very well in their efforts to vaccinate their people.. per the article, "She noted that almost 51 per cent of Albertans age 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine."

Lots of anti-vaccers out in the wild west. Anti-mask, anti-everything and many people in Alberta think its a government conspiracy.

If they all book 10 appointments, it blocks those who want the vaccine but its not a good way to get them onside. IMO

I too question the assumption that people are double-booking to prevent others from getting the vaccine. I think some people are double booking a week or two apart in case work, or something else, gets in the way and they have to cancel the first appointment. It sounds like some are forgetting to cancel one of the appointments.
