Ontario reports first two cases of new COVID-19 variant
''Ontario has reported its first two cases of the new COVID-19 variant previously identified in the United Kingdom.

In a news release issued Saturday, the Ministry of Health said the cases are a couple from Durham with no known travel history.

"This further reinforces the need for Ontarians to stay home as much as possible and continue to follow all public health advice, including the provincewide shutdown measures beginning today," Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario's Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health, said in a statement.

"Durham Region Health Department has conducted case and contact investigation and Ontario is working in collaboration with our federal counterparts at the Public Health Agency of Canada."

Both individuals are now in self-isolation. Ontario is the first province in Canada to identify the variant.''

Here we go again! We just got used to living with the original variant, and now we should re-think everything for the more contagious variant.

I want to know if there is an exception for family member who is caring for someone who is dying in her own home, my Mom.
It's certainly less risky than the random PSW's and nurses who show up who also have other patients and families of their own.

Cases of the more contagious variant of Covid-19 first identified in the UK have been confirmed in several European countries as well as Canada and Japan.

I think they figured out the connection:

The variant positive person in B.C. is from the Island Health region and had flown from London, U.K., to Vancouver on December 15.


The first two known cases of the variant in Canada were identified on Saturday related to a couple in the Durham region of Ontario. They had no travel history but had come in contact with a traveler from the U.K. recently, Health Minister Patty Hajdu confirmed Sunday.

52. Organizations and providers that deliver home care services or personal support services to seniors and persons with disabilities.

17. Domestic services that support children, seniors or vulnerable persons, including housekeeping, cooking, indoor and outdoor cleaning and maintenance services.


I would suggest you contact your Provincial Chief Medical Officer to enquire and if you aren't getting anywhere, contact your Member of Provincial Parliament who are usually only too glad to help.

Although Canada has closed borders to non-residents, it seems that a lot of Canadians and people with Canadian residency are traveling all over the world anyway. The only way that the UK mutation can be in Canada is due to people traveling internationally and not quarantining for 2 weeks. I think the rules should be stricter to deal with people who think that quarantine doesn't apply to them.

It has 188 beds. 145 infected (December 24th numbers). 43 deaths (as of 12 hours ago.) Many residents have said they’re not getting adequate food or water.

I understand that North York General has taken control, but they immediately need extra staff.

Red Cross could set up portable food service outside the home, the same way they did for the cruise ships that were docked with infected patients. The army could help.

It makes me wonder about what the residents or their caregivers signed when placing them there. No aggressive life saving measures? Comfort measures only?

They’re being left to die. This is the second wave we knew that would hit. I just don’t get it.
