Hypocritical arrogance. He lives alone so he visited family in a foreign country. Many Canadians live alone and would like nothing better than to travel to visit family, but it's not recommended because it's not safe right now.

Charges have been filed against couple who lied about how they were exposed to covid. I would like them to be publicly named. When things like this happen - people disrespecting law and society - I'm curious whether they are new Canadians. I'm just surprised when Canadians act like this.

"The first known cases in Canada of the U.K. variant of the coronavirus were discovered only by fluke, and the couple who fell ill are now facing public-health charges, CBC News has learned.

The woman and man, from Durham Region east of Toronto, had contact with a traveller from the U.K. prior to falling ill, the provincial Health Ministry said last month.

But the ministry also indicated the man and woman initially withheld that information.

"Additional investigation and follow-up case and contact management has revealed that the couple had indeed been in contact with a recent traveller from the U.K., which is new information not provided in earlier interviews," the ministry said in a Dec. 27 statement, one day after it said the couple had had "no known travel history, exposure or high-risk contacts."

The Durham Region Health Department confirmed to CBC News that both are facing charges, but would not comment further on the case, citing that the matter is before the courts. The couple has not been named publicly."

Physicians are in demand across Canada and the world. If her job in the emergency department was too stressful, why didn't she change jobs? There are many less stressful options for medical doctors. I can't help but wonder what else was going on in her life that she couldn't make choices to reduce stress in her life.

"The death of a Granby, Que., emergency physician has sent shockwaves throughout the Canadian medical community.

Dr. Karine Dion, 35, who was also the mother of a young son, died by suicide earlier in January. Her family said it was the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic that led to her death."

Ontario and Quebec are both in trouble. I suspect that means other major cities across the country are 2 weeks away from the same situation.

"The Ontario government has announced a provincial stay-at-home order and new restrictions, as new COVID-19 modelling revealed Tuesday shows the health-care system is on the verge of being overwhelmed.

The province says it is issuing the stay-at-home order effective Thursday at 12:01 a.m., which will require everyone to remain at home with exceptions for essential purposes, like going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for essential work.

"Our province is in crisis," Premier Doug Ford said. "The system is on the brink of collapse. It's on the brink of being overwhelmed." The province says it is enacting the following measures, which will come into effect between today and Thursday:
  • Outdoor organized public gatherings and social gatherings are further restricted to a limit of five people with limited exceptions.
  • People are required to wear a mask or face covering in the indoor areas of businesses or organizations that are open. Wearing a mask or face covering is now recommended outdoors when you can't physically distance more than two metres.
  • All non-essential retail stores, including hardware stores, alcohol retailers, and those offering curbside pickup or delivery, must open no earlier than 7 a.m. and close no later than 8 p.m.
  • The restricted hours of operation do not apply to stores that primarily sell food, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores, and restaurants for takeout or delivery.
  • Non-essential construction is further restricted, including below-grade construction, exempting survey.
"Community transmission is widespread. It's in our hospitals, it's in our long-term care homes, and it's in our workplaces," Health Minister Christine Elliott said Tuesday.

The province also announced Tuesday that schools in these public health units will not return to in-person instruction until Feb. 10:
  • Windsor-Essex
  • Peel Region
  • Toronto
  • York
  • Hamilton
"Schools in hotspots may not resume," Elliott said. "

Canada becoming self-sufficient regarding vaccines

"It is important for us, for Canadians, to have long-term access to made-in-Canada vaccines," he said.

Gerdts' team was among the first out of the gate with promising COVID-19 research, but did not have the manufacturing capability to create vaccine components needed to keep its momentum going. It was a temporary setback that shed light on essential gaps in Canadian infrastructure. With new funding from multiple levels of government, the team has started building what it needs to create human vaccines in-house well into the future."
...

Spurred by the urgent need for COVID-19 vaccines and with hundreds of millions of dollars in new federal funding, several teams are now building the infrastructure Canada needs to take advanced vaccine research and make it into a product within the country's borders."

Four weeks duration! It sounds like ICU beds, ventilators and oxygen supplies are exhausted. That means triaging could happen, which is the worst case scenario.

They've been cancelling or rescheduling non-urgent surgeries to accomodate COVID patients, and the numbers just keep going up. Something had to be done, clearly.

I've been staying home for a year so no difference for me.

I've been staying home for a year so no difference for me.

I enjoy solitude and have plenty to keep me happily occupied for months and years, but I do fear for the control freaks of the world who have no one to over-lord but family. That must be grim for everyone! I mean those people at work who seem to have nothing better to do than peak over shoulders to see what everyone's doing - those people must be going nuts with the isolated lockdown.
